A nice suburb in Helsinki to consider is Vuosaari. Aurinkolahti is a lovely area known for its seaview, marina, beach front apartments and is definitely family friendly. Lots of walking/jogging/cycling tracks by the sea and it's next to the Kallahden forest reserve, recreation and nature park.

There's a direct Metro to downtown which takes about 20 minutes and excellent bus connections as well. Vuosaari centre Columbus has its own post office, a City market (hypermarket), S-Market, a couple of restaurants, pizzeria, bakery, cafe, bookstore etc. The Health Centre and local library is next to Columbus - all within walking distance to Aurinkolahti. A newly built day-care centre.

Besides, a hop on the Metro takes you direct to Itäkeskus Mall just a 3-minute ride away.

Definitely a convenient and comfortable place. If someone can be so kind as to teach me how to insert photos here  (sorry I haven't learnt that yet), I'll try to post some pix.

Welcome to Finland and hope your move here will be smooth and easy!

Definitely a convenient and comfortable place.!
Especially in December with open sea, southerly wind - 15 and horizontal sleet.

And when Russia burns, breathing is still an option in Espoo.

It's true that in wintertime Helsinki Etelä (Kaivopuisto, Ullanlinna, Eira) is not that special (and sometimes windy), but in other seasons, especially in summer - it does not get any better in urban Helsinki. That shows in prices, also.

But as mentioned before, it's all about what's your preferences.

Well, I laughed a few times internally when the Koff brewery was still in the harbor and the vats sometimes belched this rank stench... well, the people there could afford the perfume

That smell reminds me of my youth.... I grew up downwind of the Courage brewery in Reading, Berks and that sickly stench of fermenting hops lingered permanently in the air. Now Courage has an ultramodern factory on the M4 and the smell has disappeared.

Behind the School, on both sides of the canal( restaurant also adjacent to the canal), close to one-pint pub.
