Thanks penelope!

Did you prefer a particular brand of baby food over others? Did you ever try baby cereals - rice, barley or oats porridge? Just mix with hot water.

BTW, is ohra - barley and kaura - oats? As I understand, barley is safe for below one year olds and wheat and other whole grains to be given after the baby is one to avoid food allergies?

Can't remember which brands I bought but, due to a history of allergies, I avoided all jars containing milk products.

As for cereals, I didn't feed mine porridge at all when they were babies. We were living in France at the time and cereals don't figure so high on the menu... Even now that we are living in Finland we never eat porridge or breakfast cereals (except muesli occasionally). But that's more a habit/cultural thing than for any other reason. (I never buy Kellogs etc., "boxes of empty calories and trans-fats" evil food.)

Yes ohra is barley and kaura is oats. Oats is one of those "superfoods" and from my understanding a fab alternative to wheat.

I'm curious why new potatoes are on the list of things that shouldn't be given to babies under 1 year old. Does anyone know or have an educated guess?

From the list I got from the Neuvola, the reason stated for avoiding new potatoes is "solaniini". (must check up what this is). It was also news to me. Good thing I got the list as I might have given new potatoes to my baby simply because I thought it was perhaps a tad "superior" in taste and it was in season.

After reading that, I was surprised that potatoes are supposed to be the first food for babies in Finland. I wonder how many greenish potatoes I've eaten in the past.
