Made a mess of it!

Post by tash » Mon Sep 25, 2006 9:20 am

Well it's one of the same old, same olds maybe? I have a work holiday visa running out October 17th, and not going to make it over in time. So I rang my Embassy and was told you can't get an extension, as its a "one off opportunity". I did come over in May for 6 weeks, and damn it! Had to come back home to Australia for an emergency, and now wanting to return and can't extend! So I have to come back over as a tourist, which means I can't work to support my holiday. And worst of all, Iam in love with a fine Finn man! And I did know him when he lived here in Australia, so its not a holiday romance:)Anyhow I can come for 3 months as a tourist, not work, then leave for 3 months and come back again for 3 months. :(
I certainly am in a pickle. 29 year old Aussie girl meets fine Finn man! Sigh! Anyhow Iam a qualified childcare assistant, and may have to try hard to secure a job contract to stay longer than 3 months. Though in Vaasa I did not see many jobs when there and searching Mol site.
Marry him! I cant, Iam waiting for my 12 month separation for a divorce to come through! AAAAAAgh!
Anyhow had to share my frustration with someone :) cheers Tash

Apply to study somewhere. For example: http://www.efo.fi/engelska/invandrar_eng.htm or http://www.puv.fi/en/

Check to see if you can get a visa that way first, it works for most people though.

And I think you'd not have too many problems finding a job in a) childcare, and b) as a native English/Oz speaker (as I assume you are!), often the two are combined, as many international nurseries etc need native english speakers to look after the kids. Just remember to bring your childcare papers with you!

I managed to get a job as a lanuage assistant in a primary school, through a friend of a friend. Although I may be waiting quite some time for the wage from the council to come through....

Thankyou for your tip! I will search the links here to find any school, kindies etc in Vaasa region and email them. I guess I would be best to do follow up phone calls as Iam applying from Australia, and have "no friend of friends". Have been searching Mol, but I guess they advertise internally in Finland? except for private daycare centres? Anyhow,it is a great idea. Thankyou again.

The best general advice that I can give to anyone trying to navigate the Finnish immigration system from abroad is this: make a list of the main reasons why you want to come and live in Finland (as opposed to some other country) and make sure that these reasons are declared in advance in your residence permit application.

Your main reason for targeting Finland as a place to live seems to be the intention to embark on/continue family life with a person who lives permanently in Finland. This is a significant and important reason that can be confirmed by the person concerned. The fact that your marriage (if that is what you intend) cannot be lawfully contracted at the moment does not negate your shared intention. Many foreigners have secured permission to live permanently in Finland in spite of various legal impediments to marriage (same sex couples come to mind immediately – such permits have been issued since at least the early 90s).

The only significant technical immigration problem that arises due to your current marriage concerns the right of your future ex-husband to enter Finland for the purpose of family reunification. This is not a serious problem unless you are accompanied by one or more mutual children.

For the most sympathetic hearing, your application should be filed from abroad. Include separate statements from both of you describing the public details of your relationship (when and where you met, any cohabitation, how you have remained in contact etc.). It is also useful to point out any reasons that make Finland a better choice than Australia for your life together. Such reasons might include your spouse's job, or his commitments towards relatives. If he has children from a previous relationship who are resident in Finland, then this is usually a clincher.

You should also include documentation showing the present stage of your separation and divorce.

If you can get a job offer or a place to study, then so much the better. However, a job or study place that is 500 miles from where your spouse lives and works will also require some explanation.

Thankyou for your information Daryl. Very clear and helpful. We have kept in contact since he left 1.5 years ago through email and letters and then myself visiting. And I do not have children which would make it easier. I now have some avenues to venture down and really appreciate your input.
Cheers
