Flu Shots??

Post by 2boys » Sun Oct 29, 2006 8:27 pm

I know back at home (Texas) it is that time to take yourself and the kids to get a flu shot. Are they readily availabe here, encouraged, and do I just call our communtiy nurse to schedule the appt. with her? Or do they have the well-known "flu shot clinics" where you show up on a first come, first serve basis?

hi, there. You can get flu shots in private clinics such as Mehilainen (that's where I got mine a couple of years ago) and similar places I should think. I can't remember whether they have a walk-in service, though, did I just book an appointment or turn up on the day. Best to check with them.

I think it is unusual to vaccinate kids up here. Mine have never had a flu shot. My husband gets his at work (and I believe it is free). I was vaccinated in ´96 and in ´97 but I felt so awful after both jabs, I haven't had one since. I am not sure if this year's vaccine is available yet, haven't seen anything in the press.

The only people who get free flu shots are those who are in the "risk group": fragile old people who might die if the flu developes into something nastier. Also some people who have other diseases like cancer. Children are not considered risk group, neither are healthy adults.

Also some work places pay their employees shots. If you want one, go to some private health center. I have done that twice, but nowadays I don´t bother (and haven´t got the flu either). I just walked into the nearest private place, waited for ten minutes, and a nurse gave me one.
