Driving foreign-registering car in Finland

Post by ollya » Wed Nov 29, 2006 12:02 am

Hello!

I’m citizen of Ukraine having Permanent Residence status “B” in Finland. I’m going to relocate to Finland for 3 years and bring my car with me for my personal using.
I know that I can bring my car as Removal Goods.

My question is following:

- How many days or months I can drive this car before registering in Finland?
- Can I drive it 5-6 month and then drive it back from Finland to Ukraine?

If the car must be registered in Finland, what will be with our ukrainian registration and ukrainian car numbers? Will police take it when registering car in Finland? If yes, can I get it back, after 2-3 years, when I will leave Finland?

Thank you very much in advance.

Ok, so if you haven't been to Finland yet - as in you just got the passport and are planning on moving - yes you can bring in a car as removal goods. if you're already been living here you need to be very careful with the dates. Now one thing - Ukraine. Outside of EU. Does the car have an Euro CoC certificate? If it doesn't - not much use bringing it if you cannot get it registered.

Once you drive in the customs you need to declare the car. They'll give you time to drive for 30 days, the customs decision will come within that time, after which you need to take it to the inspection etc. After that its in Finnish plates, Finnish insurance etc. And remember you are in "Finnish plates" as in if your friend from Ukraine comes to visit you may not borrow his car as a resident of Finland may not drive a foreign-registered car.

They let you keep the original plates and papers.
Cheers, Hank W.
