A work residency permit or working holiday visa? Please Help

Post by jonathon.cusack » Thu Feb 22, 2007 11:53 am

Hi,

I have a question about apply for a residency permit or working holiday visa, I am not really sure what one that I need. My current situation is that I am an Australia and was only supposed to be here in Turku for a couple of weeks however my circumstances have changed and I now wish to stay for longer and find work. The thing is, is that I dont know what sort of Visa I am supposed to apply for to be able to work. Will I need a Working Residency Permit? I went to the Police station today and they said that I had to already have a job before I could apply for one of those and that my employer could take care of that. However, I dont have a job yet and its proving to be somewhat of an arduous task by itself. The other thing is the Working Holiday Visa, if I could get one of those it would make it much easier to be able to function here as I could stay for longer and take my time in finding work. However, will I have to leave the country to get one of those and then come back? Or could I just go to the Australian Embassy and get my entry permit changed?

So if anyone has any answers to clear up my problems of Work Permit/Visa that would be excellent. :D

Thank You So Much :D

In all case scenarios you have to be in Australia to apply for a residence permit. The working holiday visa you can get, and you can try to look for work. Which you have a hard time to get as you don't speak Finnish, but that is beside the point. For an employment based residence permit you can try find some employer that is willing to hire you, to prove there is no other didgeridoo player available in the whole EU willing to do that job, file the paperwork while you bugger off to Australia to wait for the decision. if you apply here they'll by all probability say "wrongly applied" and tell you to piss off, and the decision making gets slower the closer to Finland you get.

Mind you, I'm not sure if you could do so, but you better check the embassy websites, that if you applied for a working holiday visa to say to the UK, as there you can find work, and there apply for a working holiday visa to Finland, so you have some money to sit around and moan why nobody wants to hire you.
Cheers, Hank W.

Just be careful with the working holiday visa. If you intend to change (ie to a work visa), be prepared for a battle (and confusion) ... and a long wait. If you want to stick just to the 'working holiday maker' deal - you shouldn't have a problem at all. But you can't apply (for the residence permit) once you're here....

Yeah, so the easiest process then to get the working holiday visa would be to go back to England and then apply at the Finnish embassy there? Because thats one of my options if I cannot find work here within the next couple of weeks.

So what exactly is the difference between the Working Holiday Visa and the Residence Permit??

Ohh well ok then, so yeah, my best bet is defintely with the Working Holiday Visa. I am still yet to find work, but then again I have only been looking for a week. I am not really looking for a career type job just something to get me by. I have a lot of contacts already here in Turku and am trying to increase that by going out into schools and getting them to know my name so they might hire me as an English teacher.

I should have sorted all of this stuff out before I got here but came here very much in a rush.

Well thanks mate, awesome help! :D
