Maternity package?

Post by Ellah » Sun May 20, 2007 10:01 pm

Has anyone received the maternity package that you can get when/if you are pregnant?
Im currently pregnant but havent been to the doctor yet (around 6weeks pregnant)
If I choose the maternity package when will I actually get it?

And one thing, if I decide to move back to my own country soonish will I not get the package? :P (nono Im not greedy, just curious)

Regards!
Ellah

and you also have to be covered by Kela in order to get it. Good luck with your pregnancy!

Have you been to your local "neuvola"?

Well I dont know, I've been to terveystalo cause I was sick, but I dont know if it's a neuvola.
But I havent been anywhere after I found out I was pregnant. I hate finnish doctors, they are mean anyway.
I dont even know. I have some number from perhe sunnittellen blablabla but they never ever answer. And then there's just hospital and terveystalo.

Info from Kela. Or in short
Expectant mothers whose pregnancy has lasted for at least 154 days and who have undergone a medical examination at a maternal welfare clinic or a doctor's office before the end of the fourth month of pregnancy are entitled to a maternity grant.
The maternity grant is either the maternity package or 140€.

6th week would be a bit early to see a doctor (Espoo pages says that first visit is usually in week 10-14), but you need to go to the neuvola (maternal welfare clinic) or a private doctor before the end of your forth month, for you to get the package.

Perhesuunnitteluneuvola, as well as neuvola, usually has only certain hours that they take calls. Check your city's web pages, they most probably have it there.

And I really don't think that most doctors are mean here. Sure there are some, but that goes for any country. But you don't have to use the public medical services, if you don't want to, you can also use a private doctor.

And congratulations on your pregnancy!!! :)

See here (click on the “prenatal clinic” link on that page), here, and here.

I didn’t know that the nationality determines the meanness factor of doctors. You learn something new every day! I wonder if it works that way for patients and expecting mothers, too?

Even if you would stay here until the end of your pregnancy, you would not see a doctor more than three times if everything goes well with your pregnancy. At the neuvola it is mainly a nurse with special training or a midwife who takes care of you. So there isn't really a point in not going to the neuvola, even if you don't like Finnish doctors. During my pregnancy I met one mean one too, but the others were all nice.

Congratulations!
