Baby Rice

Post by kiely » Sat Jul 14, 2007 9:09 am

Hi all just started on the solids and all going well.
However in the UK we can add baby rice to formula or puree.
I can't for the life of me see any in the supermarket.
The only thing I can see is readymade porridge or "Purro".

I was thinking maybe i should buy rice porridge what say all of you???

Are you in Finland or the UK? If you are in Finland, have you talked to your neuvola nurse about what you can give your baby? She would be able to tell you brands and stuff like that. I can't remember what I gave my little guy.

Babyrice

Post by Wheely » Sat Jul 14, 2007 11:42 am

Hi Michaela,

You cannot get "babyrice" as such from Finland but you can get "riisivelli" from shops though this often contains cow's milk. Furthermore it is processed. What they advice you to give in neuvola at this time might not be recommended soon anymore ... at least try not to give your baby only potato or other root vegetables, or berry/fruit sauces, or only ready-made foods solely first. (This is what has been done in Finland in the past).

Hence, you could try a Holle organic lasten riisivelli/puuro flakes available at least in Ruohonjuuri shop near Kamppi centre. You can add breast milk or formula that you use for this one. Highly recommend this one!

Have I been doing the right thing

Post by kiely » Sat Jul 14, 2007 5:25 pm

I have only been giving her an icecube full of carrot, sweet pot or potato courgette and broccoli.
Fruits we have tried are apple pear and banana.
Today after 3 weeks of trying these foods we have progressed to a2 teaspoons of banana at breakfast and sweet pots for lunch.
I don't really like prepared foods except ofcourse the pureed fruits especially the berries which we haven't got to yet.
Now you have me worried am i moving too fast??? Or giving the wrong things?

Hi Michaela,

not to worry at all!

The statement related to problems which can arise if feeding infants only on ready made berry/fruit "potfoods" (fruit, berries - often sugar added - Finland has the highest consumption of potfoods for infants in the world) or for example only on potato as first food - and this combined with very short period of breastfeeding/no breastfeeding. It is the combination that can causes problems for certain infants in risk groups - not all. It is under study at the moment whether it is something added to the potfoods, or the procedure when they are made, or whether it is perhaps the high sugar load and lower fibre amount, or perhaps even lack of something, that when given in high amounts very early on can trigger certain conditions (again ... combined with short-term breast feeding/no breast feeding) in certain infants. Mostly this is about children with genetic predisposition to type 1 diabetes and if I remember correctly it had a link to some allergies as well. But this I have to double-check.

What you are doing sounds absolutely great!!!! I was feeding Isabella with a similar regime to yours: babyrice, pear, banana and apple first ... then proceeding to vegetables and roots. I used readymade fruitpots (but tried to check that they do not added sugar) with the riisivelli as well and also as a lunch snack in the beginning. I also used and do use potfoods but did that after 6 months ... just in case.

The reason why I kind of advertised the riisivelli is that it has also been found that at least oat is protective against type 1 diabetes and there are some benefits with certain grains.

I followed the regime mentioned for Isabella and she had no problem with allergies (not yet at least) and I felt she was healthy. There are blood sugar issues in both of our families so I was being quite careful.

A strange note, but it was recommended that we not start any of our
kids off on fruits first as they get used to all food needing to taste
that sweet. So my kids were started off on veggies first (and if
the amount of veggies (and fruits) they still eat 3-7 years later is any
indication, it was a good choice). Dunno if they're still recommending
this, even though it wasn't that long ago that I was feeding babies :)

this is just my personal experience, so I am not trying to lecture you! I would say, Forget the baby rice, it´s not natural! Why buy processed baby foods? Baby Led Weaning is the way to go. I have never spoonfed! Just let the baby feed itself when it can sit unaided at the table. My babies took food off my plate,& sucked on it!

http://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/starti ... edweaning/
This is the way I chose anyway, & it worked for us & saved us money, because the babies eat real food from the start!
Anyway, if you do use bought babyfoods, just don´t buy Nestle (including Piltti, which is also Nestle)
Good luck!

hi michela,
i started on baby rice flakes, you can get a variety of ones from the supermarket,i added breast milk to it.but i gave just that as solid for a while before i added food.my only advice is go slow with the food, plain and try all on their own to see what goes first.be careful if she gets constipated, matii got a bit from different foods.
let me know if your coming on thurs i can bring the baby clothes if you still would like them

Hei Michaela,
I started on baby rice mixed with baby milk (I couldn't find what I wanted here so I just got my family to post me a dozen packets of baby rice/creamed porridge now and then from the UK which lasted ages!) then added foods to that - just like you are doing - stewed apple and pear, banana, carrots, sweet potato at first, one at a time to see what she liked. I haven't met your little one yet so I don't know how old she is, but I started Caitlin on solids at 6 months. She'll let you know when she's ready/hungry!
Cheers, Caroline

Thank you so much for all your advice.
I don't know quite why I am worrying, or doubting myself but sometimes one needs reassurance.
Don't worry I am not buying processed foods Oompah18.

Grace is approaching 5 months and yesterday grabbed the spoon and fed herself mashed parsnip. Oh how a Mother boasts!

Anyway many thanks to all of you.
