Viking Line and Stockholm for kids?

Post by karen » Tue Aug 14, 2007 11:40 pm

What kinds of great things are there for kids in or near Stockholm. We will only be there one day (6 hours?) and would like to do something fun and different with the little one.

What about on the ship itself? Are there any supervised activities for kids?

Too bad you are going Viking. Silja is amazingly good for kids with entire areas reserved for bouncy tents, mazes, pirate activities, etc. I was really impressed.

There's the aquarium, the natural history museum (with dinosaurs), a horse carriage ride around old town, starting from the palace.

You can get a full day transportation pass at the Pressby kiosks in every station. This gives you all day access to all city transportation including buses and the metro.

And for about 3e, there is a bus that will take you from the Viking terminal to Slussen - the metro station. For 5e, the bus takes you to old town. Or you can walk - it's about 3/4 to 1 kilometer to old town from the Viking terminal.

The big American foods store is an easy exit from the metro station - 2-3 blocks.

We prefer Silja, but this offer was too good to pass up.

Is that still near the Hard Rock Cafe, or has it moved?

I did too, until Tallink bought it. I've had terrible experience on Tallink compared to service on old Silja and heard horror stories of the declining quality of the service on Silja since the takeover. I won't be using Tallink (or Silja again)... which is a shame, since I only used Silja for many many years.

Between 1997 and the end of 2000, we traveled a lot (Sweden, Estonia and the rest of Europe). Dh lost his job when I was near the end of my maternity leave and I was laid off soon after I returned to work. It took us a while to recover and we stopped traveling. We hadn't been to Tallinn since June 2000, but went last October. I think it was that same summer that we made our last trip to Stockholm. We went in February this year with my brother, but it was that week that it was really cold. Now that we are traveling again, I want to show the kid all the great places we used to go. His birthday is next week so it's going to be all about him.

Other than that trip to Tallinn last year, we haven't been on any Tallink boats since 2000. I'll have to compare the quality some day.

My boys were totally gobsmacked by the Vasa ship museum (near the Pippi Longstocking place and the aquarium... they are all in the same area). It is really awesome and the tour we had was fun (in English).

BTW we travelled to Aland with Viking in June (same boat as Stockholm, stops on the way) and there was a kiddies' play area somewhere near the top deck. Supervised games and activities in a secluded area for various ages. They have cleaned up their act: even the cigarette smoke was not so omnipresent any more. There were HUNDREDS of junior footballers on the boat but the restaurant buffet managed to keep up with all of them..... I was really impressed (had expected mayhem)

We decided on the Vasa Museum and it was awesome. We all enjoyed it.

We were on Viking and there is no organized childcare. There was a playroom, but we couldn't leave him there.

None of the places on Silja allowed you to leave your child as well.
