and you think in 3-5 years the Finnish taxation has collapsed and the salaries have risen tremendously? Tupo raises have barely kept up with the inflation in the long run, this is the first Tupo (or unions' own agreements) in ages when the raises have been significant.

Why don't you produce the stats that prove my (and Veronmaksajain keskusliiton and Tilastokeskus') stats wrong.

Income Tax percentage in 2006

The development of salaries in Finland

Still high income tax + marginal salary development = not much change in the last 3-5 years.

Alexsander.... comaring nurses jobs here to Norway and the UK (without comparing them to cost of living indexes or average salary in those countries) means your either bad at maths or stupid.....almost EVERY SINGLE JOB in norway earns more money than here.....what do we do - just pay everyone more here?

Yup reminds me of that UK education secretary who came out in the early 90s (IIRC) to say, "We want all our school kids to be above average".

Actually l do know a few, and like every othewr public servant here they are badly paid.......but they don't get sacked, there company does not go bust, there jobs are protected by a bunch of red tape to avoid non-finns working the there profession, the have good working conditions (i mean contact not shifts etc) AND they knew pay was !"#¤% when they started training. Hate the simplistic childish agruments.....this is not wonder land if the nurses get 25% (and the other who will follow shortly after) this will affect everyone in Finland through inflation, (even) higher taxes, etc. But who care power to the workers...everyone gets above average pay...yippeee

And that means we also get above average prices and taxes.
Guess what will increase faster, salary or costs

'AND they knew pay was !"#¤% when they started training. '

Employee speaking to employer.

Employee. Er boss you must know my wage is s*** any chance of a rise?

Employer. But you knew the wage was s*** when you started.

Employee. Well yes but I assumed that my wage might improve over time.

Employer. That was very naive of you.

Employee, Gosh yes you are right boss, sorry to have troubled you, I should just think I'm lucky to have a s*** job with s*** pay.

Something like that.....if people voted with there feet (as they are doing now and l have no problem with that.......so long as they face the consequence that they might not get there job back) then the salaries would increase but so long as people train for jobs which have "supposed" crap pay why will the government increase it? BTW what would 13,000 nurses do in Finland if they don't want to be nurses anymore?

Just curious, but it would be interesting to see how much alcohol related illnesses cost the state. If there were some kind of penalty, such as out of pocket costs paid by the patient, (besides the high taxes on alcohol) for alcohol related illnesses in hospitals, I wonder how much money that would save, that could then be invested in motivated, hard working nurses.

Sounds harsh? Well I'm tired of all the screw ups that get their spilt milk wiped up by the government multiple times. Sure, it's nice the government takes some responsibility a few times, everyone is entitled to some help and some hard times, but when are all these people going to grow up and contribute something to society? Of course labor, the cost of living, and benefits are expensive when there is a not working, not contributing group that just sucks off the rest of society. I know it is more complicated and this isn't a black and white issue, but again, just curious about the health care related costs.

Nurses deserve more money. Now it's the government's job to figure out where it comes from. This way nurses are motivated, and maybe just maybe, there would be an actual real outside imposed consequence on anti-social activity and behavior. I'm sure this will spawn an alcoholism is a disease debate, and I agree. But seriously, can you imagine how much money is literally drunk, vomited, and pissed out on that in Finland?

Earlier the year I was really ill and spent a Saturday night in Peijas. I felt so sorry for the staff, the majority of people in the casualty section were there for alcohol related accidents. The staff were clearly pleased to see someone actually ill and not drunk and abusive. I wouldnt like to spend my evening at work clearing up vomit and having horrible things shouted at me.

The icing on the cake was that they bought in a 14 year old girl who was blotto and found passed out in a bush :(

I have to wonder if the staff in accident and emergency get attacked a lot. I got the impression they have a lot of 'regulars'

I dont think any sort of pay increase is enough for that environment!
