From EU or not EU?

I've ordered several books from the US, never had to pay any tulli. Don't know how it is with books from India.

If its under the amount of... something thy get charged upon. VAT on books was it 8% so it is more than on say ordering DVD's, as they don't give a sh*t if the total sum is under a tenner.

There might be a way round it, if for example you get a friend to buy the books and then post them to you with " GIFT - No commercial value" written on the customs label that you stick on the outside of the package. Posting the books separately is always a good idea (usually cheaper in postage).

Have you tried

http://www.amazon.co.uk (no customs charge within Europe but you pay for P&P)

http://www.bookdepository.co.uk (no VAT, free shipping charges)

The £ is cheap at the moment, so buying books from the UK makes sense. Also, delivery is pretty quick.

If price of order is less than 38 EUR and package is not oversized customs will let it through without any expenses. If price of order is around 50 EUR there is still a chance that customs will ignore it.

If your package gets stuck in customs you have to pay value-added tax (8%) and little handling fee. In this case you have to the customs office and get the package personally. No one else can't get it from there and they will not send it to you. So if you live far away from customs offices I wouldn't take a risk and order packages which cost over 38 EUR.

I don't know what are these price limits in orders inside EU. Actually I think there's not limitations at all.

I have ordered a book from Amazon US which was valued at over 100usd. There was no problem. I've also once ordered a manual (that weights around 2 or 3kg) from Hongkong with worth of over 200usd, no problem either.

But once I ordered a digital camera from US (which was very stupid move.. :beamer: ), I was charged both from US customs and Finnish customs. I ended up paying 3 times more than the cost of stupid camera...Well, I was just a teenager... :)

The post office sends a slip that has a stamp saying where it is. Used to be at teh Central Post office - though Espoo & Vantaa need to go to the Airport.
