Studying "Information Technology" in Finland.

Post by mushroom » Sat Jan 19, 2008 3:58 pm

First i would like to say hello to everyone here, I was born in Finland, lived my whole life in israel and now i'm back here to study and live :)

I have chosen to study "Information Technology", focusing on computer networks in a Helsinki "Metropolia University of Applied Sciences", it was located in Espoo i think but now it's merging in with Stadia (that's where they got the new name, old ones were Stadia and EVTEK if i'm not mistaken).

Metropolia site: http://www.metropolia.fi/no_cache/en/

I chose a bachelor's degree programme, and also to study in english, I have sent my application and hopefully i'l get a reply soon to whether i get accepted in the Entrance Exams or not.

Link to my subject:
Information Technology page: http://www.metropolia.fi/en/studies/tec ... n_english/
under "Major Options" i picked "Communications and Data Networks", i picked this because of my interest in all aspects of computers, etc...

The thing i need help with is, advice and help regarding the entrance examinations and such.

The entrance examinations include: 1)Math and either Chemistry/Physics or Information Technology questions 2)English exam 3)Motivation test

Since i happen to be weak in mathematics, i have bought some books both in finnish and english in hopes of preparing myself well for the exams, but since Metropolia don't give any previously made exams on their site to practice on or to get the general idea of what the exams will contain i am scared of failing. Also what i wanted to know is what exactly do they mean by Information Technology? general computer questions or something more deep into coding and such?

If there is anyone in here who has studied this subject before, or understands the requirements or can help me out with preparing and what to do i would be very grateful! I really love finland and i'm trying hard to make a better life for myself, so thank you.

Yes well thats the EVVK-tech campus you'll still be at... they're not "moving" anywhere. Its amoebisation. Now thats heavily engineering, so more hardware and embedded systems oriented. Say like Haaga-Helia BIT is then more design and application oriented. Across the street from the EVVK, Laurea don't got IT in English, but I'm right back off 8 hours of doing Cisco routers on a postbachelor "Advanced Network Design".... blergh...

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not quite sure you got my question correct :)

If you can kindly provide me with information of what one would study, or how to prepare before such exams studying that subject i would really appreciate it. Is there any chance you could post here what kind of mathematical questions you got, and also what kind of IT questions you got in your exams? i need to know so i can prepare myself well, thank you.

P.S: you said they weren't moving, are they still somewhere in Espoo then?

I tried to search in Finnish "ammattikorkeakoulu pääsykoe matematiikka" and found this (in Finnish, but maybe the math questions are understandable: http://www.koearkisto.com/tekniikkavalintakokeetamk.php

Some forums also appeared, and in general people seemed to think that math in those tests was very very easy.

Yes well I don't know what you do for school in Israel, but if you pass this, then that should be about the level. Besides which the poly tests are a joke, so you want to look at the maths tests to HUT if you want to "pass" something.
P.S: you said they weren't moving, are they still somewhere in Espoo then?
They are making mergers. Like Maccabi Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel Aviv join together and are then called Maccabi Dead Sea you don't see them surfing on the salt. ;)
