Does anyone in here follow the NHL? If so what's your favorite team?

I follow the Colorado Avalanche :-)

Wow, only one person... I'm surprised. I guess if you like hockey in Finland you follow a local team? Well now I know :-)

But I had seen in another post on here, someone mentioned how we need more hockey talk in the sports topic. So I thought I would give it a try. I have to agree with them, I love hockey it's a great sport to follow... be it local, international, or NHL.

And while I'm on the subject of hockey congrats to the USA on their gold medal, and to Canada for their silver, and of course Finland on their bronze in the World juniors. They all played really well through the tournament, they are all very talented young men.

Yep a wider range of sports being talked about in this forum can only be a good thing. Please continue.

Well I will try to talk about hockey in here... but it is hard if I'm only talking to myself :-)

Well for starters, there was a neat section in Impact magazine talking about the hockey players who have come to the NHL from around the world... and what a big impact they have had on the game. Including some of the greatest Finns to play the game, like Kurri and Selänne. If anyone would like to read it here is the link.

I'm a bit of an NHL fan, but I'm still in the US. I'll see what happens when I make it to Finland. I grew up in Chicago, so I'll always be a Blackhawks fan, but that goes back to when Chelios, Savard, Roenick and Belfour (and Christian Ruuttu was their only Finn) were there. Now I'm in the Bay Area and I was a Sharks fan until Teemu left. I haven't really followed anybody this year, but I think Colorodo will be scary now that everybody is healthy.

Well you can edumicate me about the game ;-) My knowledge is based on playing EA hockey on my old Megadrive in 1993 ;-) LA Kings were the best back then IIRC.

Well for the last few years it's been the same few teams who have dominated. For the West it's been, Colorado and Detroit. For the East, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. Of course there is still always the nobody team that steps it up at the end of the season.. the "Cinderella story". They go on their momentum through the playoffs, and all the bandwagoners jump on board and cheer for them while their short time lasts. But it's good for hockey, even though Cinderella never wins.

Lucky for me Teemu went to a good team, they might just do it this year. But I don't like Colorado's coaching, and I hope it won't cost them in the end. Tony Granato is in his second year of coaching, and he hasn't done the greatest job... the only reason they still have success is because they have such great players. And now they are even better after adding Teemu and Paul Kariya. But Granato keeps putting Teemu on the 3rd line... and he is getting no ice time, therefor not producing. He needs to keep Teemu on the second line with Joe Sakic, and Paul Kariya.

You can go to http://www.nhl.com to see all the information on each team, and all the latest scores and standings. I listen to the games on there as well.

As far as hockey games go, I play NHL 2004... I still only have the demo but it's a really great game. You can download the demo at http://www.easports.com/games/nhl2004/home.jsp but you need a pretty up to date system to play it. But it's worth it, it's the most realistic game I've ever played. I'm just waiting for Joe Sakic to be on the cover to buy it. Technically he is, but they aren't selling them here yet.

Well, I can talk about hockey forever... but if you have any questions I can probably answer them. I know a lot about it, from the game it's self to the teams and players.

The problem with following the NHL in Finland is firstly the time difference means one only gets history not live action.
The amount of history is also minimal..once or twice week a few minutes high lights of a couple of games which involved some action by Teemu or Saku or who ever...
Most of the Finns I know who are Ice Hockey freeks use up all their time supporting the local team, and moanining about the fact that as soon as they have a good young player he is woshed off to the NHL, and is rarely ever seen again in Finland, unless on summer vacation..most dont even get released for the world championship as they are Tied by continued/simultaneous with the World Chapionship, needs in Stanley Cup matches..
Your favorite Teemu usualy comes home for summer..probaly under orders from Wifey who want to bring the kids to see their grand parents..but he now drives a bit slower since he was fined 40,000 dollars for a bit of un-offiocial rally driving.
Speeding fines are  ..a bit high here..

Do you have salary capping like the NFL? I guess not if the same teams are dominating all the time.

No not yet, but next season the CBA (collective bargaining agreement)might fix that. The do need to do something about it, but it's not always true in hockey that the richest team wins... not like in baseball.

The New Jersey Devils don't have an outrageous payroll, and they have still dominated. Just like the New York Rangers have a HUGE payroll and they never even get to the playoffs.

Oh and about all the good players leaving Finland to go to the NHL... I understand that it sucks for you. I would hate that. But the NHL loves it, and they have made a very big impact on the game. But I do understand where you are coming from, and about the time zone difference. It makes it hard to follow.

Yeah, well players in the lower leagues are like "getting paid"? for playing?

A bit like in "slapshot"...

Hi!

I'm a hockey fan, but don't really follow the NHL because I don't have the special cable channels and I don't stay up until 2 am when the games are often shown here in Finland. I mostly follow the national tournaments, and like to see some SM liiga games on TV and in the arena. When I follow hockey I like to see a good game - don't keep any stats or root for any particular teams. (With the exception of my national team and Team Finland too, of course.) I also play outdoor hockey for fun in the winter time.

Keep up the hockey talk! I'll try to contribute if I have anything valuable to say. (Guess that is subjective :D )

Peter your just not commited enough. When Minnesota was in the playoffs last year I stay up until 4 in the morning to watch the game on the net. It was so slow that it looked like the were jumping instead of skating, but boy was it fun.

To answer the original question I am a MN fan just out of hometown pride and I was a Avalanch fan, but I don't know how they are doing without Roy.
Also where is the love for Anti Laksonen? No one here has even heard of him even though he is one of the top players on the team not to mention the only guy to play in every game that the wild have had.

Nothing else to contribute.
