How to buy tax-free cars in Finland.

Post by nkm » Tue Mar 25, 2008 5:51 pm

Does someone know how to buy tax-free cars in Finland? My friend is interested in buying Toyota/Nissan model, and having it imported to his own country (outside EU).

I would assume that its not allowed to drive the tax-free car, just after buying from the shop and drive outside Finland :) So it has to be through some car dealer, who would insure & export it.

Is price list available somewhere? Couldn't find in any car dealers page...

You can get export number plates which allow you to drive (at least) from the car dealer to the ferry. I think you just have to contact the appropriate car dealer and get them to organise it.

there should be a 6 months grace period (you are allowed to drive it, then you should pay taxes for it)

For a while (and maybe even now) Finland had the cheapest cars in Europe (before tax, of course)

Especially people who plan of "coming back" and bringing the car as "removals" did that even in the "good old days".

and for the XPRT, RTFM
1 Temporary exemption
from car tax
1.1 General conditions
A private person residing permanently in some
other state than Finland may temporarily import
a vehicle into Finland free of car tax for his
own need as a so-called tourist car (see section
1.4 "Use of foreign-registered vehicles for business
purposes") and use it in Finland on the
following conditions:
 The vehicle is registered outside Finland,
and the registration is valid.
 The vehicle is allowed to be used for not
longer than six months, continuously or
interruptedly, during a period of twelve
months.
 The use of the car is not connected with
purchasing the vehicle to Finland.

it is "funny" that your RIGHTS as a permanent resident kick in after 4 years BUT your *OBLIGATIONS* (to the TAX/police/state system) go live after 185 days (spent here).

maybe this should be worth a good fight in court: as soon as you're considered by the TAX system with "permanent" status, then you should enjoy ALL rights that come from permanent residence status (under the current model the state basically STEALS from the temporary residence/workers without giving anything in return)

anyone on this boat? anyone with background in law sharing his/her view about the issue? or willing to take the case? :ochesey:
(a small fee x number of temporary residents willing to fight for their rights, might keep busy a professional lawyer suing the state for a while :lightbulb: )

Yes, we are talking of a tax free car bought in Finland. The "foreigner" may drive it- not the person residing in Finland. And RTFM The use of the car is not connected with purchasing the vehicle to Finland. So if you intend to import it you may not drive it.

A foreigner moving to Finland person must have owned the car before entering Finland if they want to avoid the car tax and bring it as "removal objects". Paying taxes on any import or a "tourist car" one needs really to calculate what "benefit" one has for having to pay car tax + VAT on the old/new car as its not calculated from the "tax free price" the person bought it with so it might actually be more expensive.

If you think you've got a case, then take it to the European Commission. All you have to do is file a simple complaint form which describes your position. It costs nothing and you don't need to appear in court as plaintiff (the EC acts as plaintiff on your anonymous behalf). Here's a campaign that resulted in a recent European Court of Justice process:
http://www.verosirkus.net

The decision is now pending; if successful, then Finland's lawmakers will be obligated to amend their procedures. This might be a good time to contact Parliament members via email or letter and tell them your thoughts. And by all means, file a complaint regarding the car tax if you think you've got a case.

Cheers!
