fiction writing?

Post by laurie » Sat Mar 15, 2008 2:49 pm

I have done a good bit of web searching for English language fiction writing workshops around the Helsinki area and have only come up with literature classes, and one non-fiction association. I also looked around the university but they don't have the same bulletin boards everywhere for finding postings. I'm referring to classes outside of the university system. I am considering starting a workshop if none exist. Can any of you share what you know of any English language fiction writers' community here in Helsinki? And do you think such a workshop is a feasible idea? The only posting I've found on the forum is years old and then did not garner much response. Let me know if you have anything to share.

Thanks.
Laurie

I could possibly be interested if you find something or do start one. Unfortunately I have no information to offer.

It sounds cool. I think there used to be one at Jolly Dragon but I couldn't find it anymore. If you do decide to set it up, please post the info here!

I think the keys to getting people to go would be: 1) free 2) focussed topics 3) easy to get to. The problems I have had with these types of workshops in the past is that if it is a PITA at all to go, people tend to drop out. Just my .02. :D

Glad to hear from two of you so far and I will keep monitoring this site as I formulate ideas, to check for new replies and to give updates.

Thanks again.

Thank you, Hank. I did find her and sent a message. I have to say I am honored by a reply from the august Hank! I also have appreciated your writing on the forum, particularly the earliest memory piece. Excellent class prompt - earliest memories. I plan to use it.

We are gaining critical mass for a workshop - 4 now possibly. I think we should meet soon - maybe at the Eliel in the railway station, to just discuss this further. I'll wait a few days to set this up in case others are interested, then we should plan via PM.

Write on.

Mikie, Kay30 & Susan, are you interested in meeting to explore the possibility of a writing group? I could do so late Thursday 4:30 on, or on Saturday - at Eliel, as it's central, or elsewhere convenient in town. If the group has 4 members, it means reviews of work every other meeting based on two per meeting, so lots of feedback and incentive to produce. We can discuss details further of course. If this week isn't good, let's discuss next week. Please send me a PM.

This posting got lots of views (particularly when we were near the pizza posting) so I know there are other writers out there, and I'll still take additional replies.

And thank you, raamv, for the great listing you shared - people interested in literature should check out that link.

Hey Laurie!

I'm still here! :D

Sorry for the late reply. I was not available last week in March anyway.
I think four people for a writing group is a very good start. I would say it's an ideal number for feedback.
If you are back from the States, let me/us know to plan a meeting.

 I was wondering why you chose the culture & CUISINE for this post.

See you soon then!
