Filming opportunities at football clubs in Finland?

Post by RSim » Tue May 06, 2008 2:54 pm

Long story short, i've fallen in love with Finland. Love the place, and I want to live and work there.

Currently I work for a production company and film SPL (Scottish Premier League) matches for analysis. I'll also be filming the UEFA Cup Final behind the goal for UEFA analysis.

I was wondering if these skills are easily transferrable? I'm guessing not, but in the Finnish Premier League, do teams film their own performances and analyse them afterwards?

I'm still young (only 21) but really love Finland and the people so much... I want to live there and hopefully find a way to transfer my skills to a job over there, but really not entirely sure where to start apart from e-mailing managers at the many clubs in the Finnish Premier.

Can anyone suggest anyone else to contact?

I know it's a difficult one, but really unsure where to even start!

If anyone can help it'd be great!

Your main problem is the short football season.
It has just started...and ends October...or earlier up north..if the pitch gets too icey.

Perhaps you might be able to turn your hand to filming ice hockey... longer season (Sept - March/April?), and never seems to be off the TV, I have no idea how many times they play each other .... too many.

Nice to see Dubya's team make it to the UEFA final, even though he was shyte for us.

Yeh that's a nightmare, but there's also the lure of UEFA Cup and Champions League matches which could extend it a little bit beyond those dates, depending on how well they do.

Do you think there's even a remote possibility that a club in Finland have, or want someone to film their matches for them? Is it big enough of a deal over there for managers to want the best from their players etc? I'm just trying to think of a way i can transfer the skills that I have.

I'm guessing there is an opportunity, but then again asking them by e-mail seems a bit 'unprofessional' and it might be treated like spam mail.

Just not entirely sure how to approach it. My CV is pretty impressive in terms of what i've filmed so far at my age, but like i say, it's still so difficult to transfer those skills to another country... Or atleast i imagine it to be.

If I were you I would try and contact this guy.
He would know if there is any chance.

He is still around I saw him down town a couple of weeks ago..

My guess is he is behind the scenes at this club.

Thanks very much.

My dad is an ex-professional player and i think he might know Mixu Paatelainen, so I might try getting in contact with him also... Reckon he'd be able to give some suggestions?

I think several of the clubs have Brits as coaches (or assistant coaches) so sending your CV to individuals at the clubs might be a good starting point.

But even if you did get some work, it is extremely unlikely that it would amount to more than pocket money, even if you set yourself up as a freelancer and travelled around the country. The SM liiga budgets are small (microscopic) compared to the UK.

Maybe i could put my CV in to television channels that film the matches in Finland?

I suppose it's

http://www.urheilukanava.tv/

Finnish teams typically exit the CL in the first qualifying round and rarely go more than 1 or 2 rounds in the UEFA.

Yeh, i guess you're right.

It's so incredibly difficult, i want to move to Finland and live and work there but can't think of anything easily that'd allow me to transfer my skills across accordingly.

So very difficult!

Finland isn't designed for "easily"... You're 21, enroll into a polytechnic, learn the language, and get a "real job"

I'm a cameraman, that's a real job! I'm creative!

As an aside, what's a 'polytechnic'?

A college giving bachelors degrees that have programmes in English. (if you want to get to the uni, you need to have a bachelor degree to start with). Point here is studying in Finland is "free" (as in no tuition fees) paid by yours truly ... getting in then again is a challenge. Even you're a gift from the gods handling a dolly, it never hurts having a "plan B" edumcashun there in the back, so when you're on the street with a meter of snow and horizontal sleet you're not going "spare change for an excellent cameramen" but in a nice cozy office designing silly walks. See now "you don't live off art" - as my dad the icon painter said. I take photos too, but I have a job that brings the bread to the table. And - as a foreigner -without the language - you can't do any of those "crap jobs" available in old blighty, as they're not available. ; First thing they ask in *any* non-education job is "puhutko Suomea" ;)
