Elisa Internet - throttling?
Elisa Internet - throttling?
Has anyone else had any issues with Elisa ADSL internet recently?
Every time I start to use Bit Torrent (to download some legitimate, albeit large linux image files) it allows Torrent to work, but completely shuts down me accessing any other internet service (web pages wont load, messenger will disconnect).

Re: Elisa Internet - throttling?
I had this problem a few years ago (also with legitimate files
), and it wasn't anything to do with Elisa. I don't remember the solution, sorry, but a search of the p2p forums could help you. Report back how you get on in case anyone else has the same problem in the future!

Re: Elisa Internet - throttling?
Many internet service providers assign each individual customer a specific bandwidth they are supposed to work inside of. Bit Torrent uses all of your available band width, hence the inability to access any other web functions while running it (Bit Torrent).

Re: Elisa Internet - throttling?
probably you have to configure your torrent client to use less connections and less max bandwidth. or even lower it when you're surfing with other things (eg to 10% of your ADSL speed) and put it back higher when you've finished surfing.

I don't have Elisa but have Welho and have had major problems lately. Dropped connections, inability to connect, etc. Really, really annoying.

Same here. At some point I was wondering if it was a local problem or something related to Welho. Seems that's the latter.kay30 wrote:I don't have Elisa but have Welho and have had major problems lately. Dropped connections, inability to connect, etc. Really, really annoying.

I spoke to them recently about the same problem, they said it's a problem with the 'connector box' in our block as others had complained of similar problems. Put my name down for a repair.NanaM wrote:Same here. At some point I was wondering if it was a local problem or something related to Welho. Re: Elisa Internet - throttling?
We've also been having problems for close to 3 weeks now with our Welho connection. We scheduled a repairman for tomorrow, for which we had to wait more than 10 days. It's been better today and yesterday but was timing out or simply not working for hours at a time several times a day. Not good considering I work from home.
Re: Elisa Internet - throttling?
Mine seems to be better the past few days. But I would be interested to hear what they say your problem was if you want to keep us updated! I am sure any day now it will break again...
Re: Elisa Internet - throttling?
I am using Welho, and had no problems so upgraded to 100Mbps.
BitTorrents may attract the attention of authorities if you are sharing something that is a big no-no in their black little book. I quit using all file sharing softwares after I was introduced to the wonderful world of premium rapidshare world

Re: Elisa Internet - throttling?
This is especially relevant for the "up speed", since with ADSL you don't have nearly as much up bandwidth as down AND when the "up" gets too much it also affects stops the "down".bevanrl wrote:probably you have to configure your torrent client to use less connections and less max bandwidth. or even lower it when you're surfing with other things (eg to 10% of your ADSL speed) and put it back higher when you've finished surfing.

The good folks behind the Glasnost project have created some tools to help you find out if your ISP is throttling your connection.

They even have a world map of offenders with Comcast USA in number one. Enjoy

It seems there's no throttling in Finland so maybe it's just a matter of optimizing your client settings.

Re: Elisa Internet - throttling?
Right...an update for those having similar problems with Welho.
Repairman came out on Tuesday. Tested the cable coming from the wall, talked on the phone with I suspect someone from Welho land and said that it's not something in our building or with our hardware.
He said that there has been an issue with a central server which they cannot seem to isolate / figure out. He also said that an increasing number of similar complaints have been received and they are working on it.
Basically, he said that we need to report any problems we have with our connection and they will continue to try to sort it out.
Oddly, this week has been much better. We've had a few time outs / service interruptions. But, nothing like the previous two weeks.
