Drivers License

Post by sokser » Sun Sep 21, 2008 9:01 pm

I have a US drivers license and I was wondering if its possible to drive in Finland with it. I don't have an international license though.

as a tourist, yes - if you live as a resident you need to exchange it to a Finnish one.

All the info you need is on the Poliisi website :)

The first 6 months you live here, you drive with your US license. Then after that you have another 6 months where you can still drive with your US license, but then you are also able go to the police station and trade it for a Finnish license. And after a total of 18 months living in Finland, you can no longer just trade your US license for a Finnish one and you have to go to take a driving test and written exam.

I had the same question and found this post. I noticed when trading a US license to a Finnish license after 6 months, they also require
"a document stating that the applicant has been driving a car in Finland for at least six months"
Would anyone happen to know what this document is? Is it a letter from spouse or friend?
Thanks a lot!

Yep. Especially if you haven't owned a car then you need to explain a bit.

It's an official piece of paper given by the police that requires two signatures. It can be signed by anyone who has a Finnish driver's licence.

I think it can be signed by any two witnesses that they have seen you driving in Finland. I don't think those two persons should have driving licence. Any body can sign.

This is a bit late for this topic, but couldn't you show how long you have been driving by just showing proof of your car insurance? The policy should show dates or get a statement from the insurance company.

Won't work because you can have car insurance here and not even have a valid drivers license, ie not legal to drive.

That is true, I know several families with 2 cars that have kept the husbands insurance (with full bonuses) with wife's car after the husband has changed to a company car.
