Elina, Brit/Finn female, 21, wanting summer job in Finland

Post by Elina Beswick » Mon Feb 23, 2009 10:16 pm

Hello,
My name is Elina, I was born and brought up in Edinburgh, however my mum is Finnish and thats what I speak at home. I'm currently a third year sociology student living in Glasgow, occasional summer holidays to Finland with the family are no longer enough to keep my Finnish up to scratch so was hoping to spend a summer over there. I was looking into being an aupair, but it seems quite a lot af families want you to speak english finnish and swedish. Some of my family live in Turku so accomadation isn't an issue if I was to find some sort of restaurant/bar work.
Am having major difficulty with the job sites, I can speak finnish, I even have an authentic, back in the day Rauma accent (thanks mum) but can barely read or write it.
Any help would be much appreciated, cheers, Elina
P.s forgot to say, would be wanting a job between May and September

Hi Elina,

http://www.mol.fi/paikat is the jobcentre's job search engine, where you can select keywords, so maybe that's easier than spelling them yourself. Here's current restaurant-related jobs from the jobcentre site: http://www.mol.fi/paikat/Search.do?lang ... resultList

This is a list of bars/restaurants in Turku, you could also try just e-mailing/calling them about work: http://www.vapaa-aikavirasto.com/ravintolat/?pid=383

Another jobsite, but I guess they don't have summer jobs advertised so often: www.aarresaari.net

Then there's student jobs in the Turku area advertised on this site (there's also a summer job category, "Kesätyö"): http://rekrytointi.utu.fi/?cmd=viewJobs

Good luck!

Thanks for the links they are just what I was needing. Last time I was in Turku I went to Rento a couple of times and it seemed quite cool, might try to contact them about a job. And as to the last post, yeah I've heard my accent sounds a tad country bumbkinesque lol

Sus siunaa, sä et edes puhu englantia etkä suomea niin, että niitä joku ristitty ymmärtäis.

I suggest finding a job in Malmö to get the right flair of Swedish.

Hey! For a start I grew up in Edinburgh, I'm only studying in Glasgow and I have a lovely Scottish accent, and there's nothing wrong with a little country charm, people from Helsinki can be such snobs, your just determined to leave mean posts for everyone!

I simply think the usual "tell people how it *really* is in Finland"-attitude here quite misplaced, since she's not moving here for good and is not a newbie concerning Finland. So don't know what the references to "sensitivity" and how that won't help in Finland are really to do with her question about summer jobs. And since the recession affects all of Europe anyway, it's probably as likely or unlikely that she finds a job here as in Britain.

:-D You're too immersed into Helsinki-meininki it seems, most people outside the pääkaupunkiseutu find Helsinki people snobs and arrogant :-) In that sense, she won't have any problems in Turku (which is where she said she'd have accommodation) ;-)
