Americans: Tax question

Post by rob34 » Fri Apr 10, 2009 5:54 pm

Judging from this link....
http://www.irs.gov/publications/p54/ch04.html

All we have to do is fill out the exclusionary portion of form 2555, right?
Choosing the Exclusion
The foreign earned income exclusion is voluntary. You can choose the exclusion by completing the appropriate parts of Form 2555.
Or do we even need to fill out that form? It says it's voluntary.

So if I file form 2555 do I need to do the typical 1040 US tax form?

Man! nobody is so free to first read your link, then understand your problem and then answer your question. Explain your problem, tell about link, give the link and get the answers.

Thanks, catdaddy.

Do you know if we need to send in a copy of our payslips, or is simply filing out the numbers on form 2555 good enough?

Send in a copy of your last payslip which would have your gross salary amount for the whole of 2008. That's what I've always done at least and I haven't had any problems. Best of luck!
