QUESTIONS? ekk.

Post by MissAlice » Wed May 06, 2009 10:20 pm

Hei Hei everyone!

I will be moving to Helsinki this summer for a internship opportunity. I was wondering on a few things because when I went there last time I didn't do as much "research" as I thought I would. (I blame Vappu  )

First question is:
I heard that you can get a prepaid card (like for any country) BUT I was wondering when buying the card do you get a free cell with it, because of now I live in paris (not french) and I know here they offer a free cheapy cell with the purchase of a sim card? also do you get those free minutes they give you???
If so where are these places, I asked a friend (he lives there) if he can show me when I go to live there but it would be great to have some names of these places (being that he doesn't own a cell phone of his own).
Also I have a french cell phone, if there is no deals like getting a free cell phone in purchasing a sim card at a store, then can I use my french cell and just replace the sim in that?

Second question is:
For banking, I know when I got a bank account in Paris, I had to show that I have an address in Paris and that I have incoming funds and etc. Is it the same in Finland? Because some banks in Paris won't allow the person to have a bank account unless they have a living card (residence permit) and I would need a bank account as soon as I get there. If you have any good links to banks then please do send because I would need all the info and etc.

Third question is:
How long does it take to get a residence permit? or even a working permit? I'm an american citizen (not french) but as of now I do live in Paris. Should I apply now here with the embassy in Paris? Because I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to wait till last minute. Also should the company that I will be having the internship help me in this or they only play a little role in signing some papers and etc?
Also I know here in Paris they have a law saying that all fashion interns or any interns should get some sort of payment or food stamps from the company? I was wondering if Finland has that kind of law, being that I know all countries are different maybe there is something of that?

If you read this or posted back thanks for taking the time.... Yeah I know some questions are very stupid but I'm just trying to figure out everything so I'm not that lost when I get there!

KIITOS EVERYONE!

So you ask all the insignificant questions first and then leave the crucial one last.

Anything from six days to six months. Basically the company would need to apply the work permit for you - but depending on how long this is for it might not be necessary. http://www.migri.fi has the answers and you should apply in Paris. If you are unsure ask the embassy.

If the phone you have in France is one unlocked so you can change the SIM then it'll work here with a local chip. Not really cheap phones unless you get one of those motorolas for a bang. Banks are about as pissy as in France, some want more than others.

ahhh yess, you, I was thinking you might post something of that "insignificant questions" kinda remark in there. I've been looking at this Finland forum for awhile now and I knew you would just pop up. Not saying your info wasn't that helpful... info on the cell phone was ok, and for the visa yeah. But a pre warning to you, even if you do have good insight for info on moving to finland or anything on that matter.... I prefer not to hear it from you if you have those little snicker remarks on the side. But all in all... Kiitos for the info

Hhahahahah see the funny thing is that I have stayed in Finland a couple of times, and like any other country they are filled with unfortunate people like you. But being on the positive side, I haven't ran into any Finns in that nature, maybe, its because I just have a better quality in finding good friends. SO , thank you for your welcoming into your country (I had better and more original ones), I will enjoy my time in Helsinki working and etc, while you two sit on your computers making yourselves feel a little bit better in the day by making unnecessary comments.

Information comes with a price you say... wow you have been brain washed by society haven't you?

How about you keep to those intelligent friends of yours and ask them your stupid questions then. If you don't have a proper residence permit you won't be moving in so theres no need for a phone nor banking. Get your priorities straight you arrogant american bitch.

Oh look, a person who can't handle some "sweet" talk and has to go to pointless profanity.

Unlike some people that walk into a country with a blindfold thinking everything will be point blank and handed to them, I'm not like that. I respect the Finnish culture. So yes I have asked some of my friends questions in that matter, but I don't feel like bothering them a lot and try to look on my own or ask in a forum like this. Questions are never stupid, a unasked question is. I don't think I'm being arrogant at all, I just don't put up with !"#¤% or keep my mouth shut when people like you think you can lower another by a senseless remark, like you did before.

I signed up to this forum, because it says, "find information about moving to, living and life in Finland". And I know I don't need glasses, it doesn't say anywhere in that phrase, have a imbecile answer your question. Wait, cross the imbecile out, I have read your other post and you are quite knowledgeable,so add rude (maybe the imbecile goes to the other retard that answered my post leaving no info at all).

Also another thing about the "arrogant american bitch"....... Any person that is ignorant enough to add a nationality to a inappropriate comment, ex: you, is a moron. Nationality should never be included to arguments if its not involved in the subject, people are all the same and its a shame morons like you have to define the uniqueness of a person in a quick slur like that.

If you don't like my answers then write your own.

Anyways, the embassy is on Place de Finlande on the south bank (M Invalides) just off Pont Invalides, so go there saying you're interning for some lard drapery and see what they tell you. Or actually call them up first and ask when they're open 01.44.18.19.28 or 01.44.18.19.29 If they say to come over bring all the papers with you (they want to see the contracts, hours, conditions etc.) and they'll say if the company then needs to get a labor opinion or not. And don't get run over by a mototaxi on Quai d'Orsay like some american tourists gawking at the Eiffel.

Pursuivant is one of the most helpful posters in this backyard. Of course, he likes to bully but take it as a psyc test to know if you can really live in Finland.

Pursuivant did answer your questions although it came attached with his usual sly remarks which ofcorse you din't like...Getting correct information in Finland is a premium for which you might have to deal with its side effects most often than not..
1.No major telecom operatos in Finland offer a free phone with a pre paid...Usually the goodies come with a post paid contract wherein the customer is bound to use the services of the operator for the contracted period..After the contract is over you get to keep the phone and can use any operator of your choice...
may be you can try looking at R-Kioski...I recall they have some kind of offer where you get the phone with a pre paid subscription but don't exactly remember if the phone comes free with the prepaid card or one has to pay a little amount for it..but you can check it out..
2.Banks would like to see some kind of proof that you have been granted a permit to stay in Finland..Most probably your passport with the permit would be enough...But some banks are adamant in checking a finnish photo identity card...Like it was the case with me when i went to open my account with Sampo after i had been granted a first residence permit...My passport didn't convince them enough though ofcorse it had the residence permit sticker affixed on it...they specifically wanted to see a finnish photo identity card...Needless to say i couldn't open my account there...but opened it with Nordea the same day...little bizarre that my passport was enough for Nordea but not good enough for Sampo...
3.Residence permit can take any amount of time ranging from 3 weeks to months...it depends on various factors and i am not that knowledgeable anough to explain all those factors to you in details...
Anyways, best of luck for your future endeavours and welcome to Finland.

I'm not saying I don't like your answers "darling", I did find them helpful especially this one about the embassy. But really there is no reason to be rude, it was a fair 3-2 victory for US

Some people when asking for help don't like to be lowered in the process and for me I only know how to stand up for myself in that matter. Also the nationality was a low blow to me, being that I do have some problems with that. But with all that said there was not once I didn't have a smile on my face when typing it all. You were semi-helpful and I have read many of your post, but you are also in this game of critiquing. Don't worry guys I will play in your in your little games for answers to some of my questions but at the same time I will comment the stupid remarks....

thanks for the info  :beer_yum:
