Elk farm

Post by umit » Wed Jun 24, 2009 12:11 pm

Is there any elk farm (or reindeer, moose, etc. I don't know the difference) in or close to Helsinki???? My friends want to pay a business visit to one of them...

Kind regards.

Moose and elk are wild animals, so you cannot "farm" them. Reindeer herding area is up north... the southernmost place that has a few is in Kokemäki

Moose you get on your car in whole Finland, for a reindeer you have to drive up north :) You can win from a reindeer, would not make a moose angry. Do not think the animals are into business at the moment, it is holiday time

Thanks CatNip, but my friends are not interested in those kinds of farms, zoo or wildlife parks. They want to examine the feasibility of importing large amounts of elk meat from Finland...

If they want to buy meat (as in it being detached from the animal), they would probably get more luck talking to a trader acting on behalf of a meat processing plant (one doesn't normally buy meat at the farm gate in Finland, unless the farm has a meat licence. Taking an animal between your legs and cutting its throat with the bread knife has been legislated out of the Finnish way of life for some time)

My friends want to see a farm, I'm sure the farm owner would also inform them about legislation and the Finnish way of life, when they attempt to cut one of the elks right at the spot...

Moose are not domesticated, so no farms with them. Reindeer is somewhat domesticated, but even they are roaming by themselves most of the year.

I've never heard of a moose farm, one where they actually raise moose in large numbers for slaughter (not the type where you can take the kids for an afternoon looking at farm animals and buying icecreams).

Moose live wild in Finland
Hunters shoot a certain number each year (somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 depending on the population size)
Hunters' families and their friends use the meat
Some is sold to supermarkets via licenced meat plants

Find a trader!
