I have been using Nokia E 71 for 11 months now. I always thought that the navigation feature (voice) is free. I did a bit of google and on some pages it is mentioned that navigation is free only for 3 months. I searched my phone for the license option and it says mine is valid for 51 days. If indeed there is a license and valid for 3 months, it should have been over by now ? why 51 days ? Any pointers.
The original problem is that my phone bill shows lot of WAP data packets, and I was wondering where it comes from? I rarely use my phone for net purpose but I do use the navigation feature while driving. I have changed the settings to not connect to internet, so there should be no data packets. Or does it have to download the map everytime I switch on the navigation feature, even though I have used it only in Helsinki city area.
My phone bill shows two items - Datasiirto - internet - yhteydet, and Datasiirto - WAP -yhteydet. What is the difference between two ?
Appreciate your answers, thanks in advance.

Nokia Maps on E71 - Queries
Re: Nokia Maps on E71 - Queries
Internet could be your 3G data Access which is usually configured as your "internet profile"greenhorn wrote:I have been using Nokia E 71 for 11 months now. WAP is when you access internet using your WAP profile instead of "internet profile" AND/OR when you send MMS. ( Can also be used when you use your "GPRS" profile).
If you surf the web Profiles generally used is downloaded automatically. The default setting for some 3G phones is "Internet" profile which ( if 3G is not available) then it drops to
GPRS, then WAP and then circuit switch data.

Re: Nokia Maps on E71 - Queries
If you bought it in Finland it might be you had a 12 month licence, at least most E71 sold here seem to have that licence.greenhorn wrote:I have been using Nokia E 71 for 11 months now. That would explain why you still have 51 days left after using it for nearly 11 months.
How do you get your maps? Do you download them manually via the Nokia Map Loader or when needed via your mobile? If you download them manually, then it shouldn't need any network connection for the maps and the voices.
Here in Finland, I have done everything I can to blend-in with the Finns, I've changed my hair color, wore differnet clothes, got different
Re: Nokia Maps on E71 - Queries
Thanks Raamv and Pierrot. Combining both of your responses does give me all the answers.
Yes I bought the phone here, so I got 12 months license. It has just reached its 11th month of use. I never bothered downloading the Nokia maps. Before E71, I had 6110 Navigator and it had all the maps pre-loaded, so I assumed this would be the case here. That time it was Route 66 maps and not Nokia maps. It also had infinite license (time period). I will check the CD, didn't use it yet. I will try to load the maps manually.
And Raamv, I have not defined the internet access point. When the phone automatically connects to net, I guess it uses Elisa WAP profile and when I open some site, I go through internet, as I would do for Wlan. This comes as internet access point. Mystery solved !
Wow! feels good to have the answers. I always thought I knew everything about these new gadgets, but they are evolving faster than I could learn.

Re: Nokia Maps on E71 - Queries
Mostly, your maps are free..But voice navigation is the one you need license for.
If you dont need voice navigation, you can use it as a normal GPS navigator w/o voice..

Re: Nokia Maps on E71 - Queries
Thanks Raamv. After one year I will check how much it costs. If it does not cost a bomb, then I will get it, or else voice is not needed unless on a car.
