Extract from the population register

Post by Donpeblo » Thu Sep 10, 2009 6:18 pm

Hello,

We're two non Finns, happily established in Finland. Our daughter was born last week and we want to register her birth with our embassy. In order to do this they require an extract from the Finnish population register.

I know where the office is in Helsinki, my questions however are

What paperwork do they require from me (in addition to what we recieved at the hospital)?
What does it cost?
How long should it take?

Thanks
Donpeblo

it's from the Maistraatti on Albertinkatu. It costs around 5 Euros. I have a feeling that you get it there-and-then but not very long.

It also might save you some trouble if you've filed in the paperwork they sent for the child's name - they won't start asking in the maistraatti until past 3 months, but I think the embassy might hiccup a bit. Now getting the babys name into the computer takes a few days with all the paperwork travelling.

If your embassy wanted to have the papers from Maistraatti with a notary/Apostille seal, that can also be got from the same Albertinkatu office (one or two floors up). Fee was, I think, 10-20€.

That, like the papers themselves they give you while you're waiting - assuming you have followed Pursuivant's advice and registered your child's name in advance.

Hello,

Thanks for all the advice. As I went to the Maistraatti today and got everything sorted I thought I would post here so others might benefit.

The baby was born in the Hospital on a friday. The hospital gave us some paperwork and a certificate of live birth (in English) because we asked for it.

One week later a letter arrived from the Maistraatti - we gave the childs name, nationality and mother tongue. Both parents had to sign and date the form.

I went to the office in Helsinki (it's currently on the second floor due to renovations btw). They took the form off me and when I asked for the Virkotodistus they said no problem and it would take 10 minutes. It cost 4,50€. You also have a choice as to which language you want it in - most western european languages are covered.

It was easy....now to get her registered with our embassy, but that is another story....
