Doritos corn chips and salsa?

Post by Cloudberry » Wed Sep 30, 2009 7:33 am

Does anyone know if Doritos brand corn chips and salsa is available in Finland? If not, are there similar brands available? I love to make vegetarian nachos pretty regularly and these are the two key ingredients.

It's pretty hard to find doritos but they have corn chips all over the place here. Same with salsa, and for salsa its pretty easy to make your own as well :)

LOL true, I could make my own. It's just nice to grab the jar for a lazy dinner every now and then. What do you put in your salsa? I've just used fresh and/or canned tomatoes, onion, diced capsicum, chilli powder, salt/pepper. Are there any other special ingredients that would go in a Salsa? *wondering now if I should've put this in the foodie section*

Doritos on the other hand... I like to use the plain originals. I've tried other brands but nothing seems the same. But it's good to know there's other types there to try out. I'm willing to give other brands a go.

for salsa we also put an acid... usually lime juice... many commercial salsas use
vinegar, cilantro is is common as well & red onions are a nice alternative to yellow.

Dunno, are you actually allowed to go out of the house and go to a supermarket? Like even my small K-market has 5-6 different brands of corn chips and various salsas so I am quite a bit at loss what the problem is. Except theres no Velveeta of course, and the RRHWS can't find marshmallows.

Ooo sounds great. I've never put cilantro (that's coriander right?) in salsa. Yes, I've used red onions before and they give a much nicer flavour.

If I wasn't on the other side of the planet I would hop down to a supermarket in Helsinki and check the situation out myself Hank :P
WTH is Velveeta :?:

A really simple salsa recipe I use is 2 tomatoes, 1 onion, 1 fresh jalapeno (without seeds), cilantro, salt to taste, and lime juice. Blend it all up to the consistency that you like and enjoy :)
The cilantro in my opinion is the key to the whole thing.

I'd actually planned to make veg nachos tomorrow, I bought everything I needed today (it was in the corn chip isle that I began to wonder how easy/difficult it would be to find Doritos in Finland). You've convinced me to make the salsa from scratch - I'll definitely try the coriander and lime juice. I'll keep the jar of salsa I bought today for dipping or something else

Also a clarification to my little recipe is that the cilantro is fresh, not the dry powder stuff. Use as much or as little as you like.

I was quite surprised to learn you are correct. Cilantro and coriander are the same plant.

However, coriander seasoning comes from the seeds of the cilantro plant. What one puts into salsa is typically the leaves of the plant, chopped fine.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Lidl has really good corn chips, the cheese flavor taste just like Doritos. They have pretty good salsa too.

I just picked up a fresh bunch of cilantro/coriander ready for tonight's vegetarian nachos extravaganza. Yeah, I use coriander seed powder in Indian curries and even sprinkle it on roast lamb. It's a handy spice to have on hand but very different flavour to fresh cilantro/coriander. I take it fresh cilantro/coriander is readily available in supermarkets across Finland? We use at least a bunch a week.
