It would be quite impossible to be a doctor without speaking English. Study books and research is not (even nearly) always in Finnish.

It usually depends on people´s age. Before 1970 schools often offered German as 1st foreign language. For example most of my friends have had 8 years of German at school, and only 3 years of English (or French).

My own doctor in Espoo speaks really good English and is always willing to use it but when she is on holiday or absent for any reason she is replaced by locums who are invariably Russian, Estonian or, last summer, Latvian. And they do not speak English. There are also doctors (my only experience of the private sector, Diacor in Iso Omena) who don't want to speak English (for whatever reason) and seem to begrudge the mere presence of foreigners (but that was a one-off and I won't be going there again).

But I would agree that the vast majority do speak English and are more than willing to do so.

Good example of a community where the terveyskeskus sucks, the doctors indeed don't speak English and where they ask you very strange questions when you call for an appointment.

But in the neighboring community the doctors are great although they are 2/3 Russian and I have had only once a minor problem with understanding the doctor, private or public.

And about those strange guestions. Nurse wanted to know if i had have orgasm, well i as 15 old shy boy and i lied and then she wanted to see my balls! Oh horror! She commented that i will have soon if i hadnt already... Think about :beamer: when you have to take pants off front of nurse :D
I saw in her face that she knew i lied but still she had to check if im OK. There is good reason behind of those strange questions. Those are for your good. And my check was one of last included in "lastensuojelu" (i think) so it was mandatory, to be sure kids are OK.
Stamped in book "healthy kid with quite strong growing", i were small till 10 to 15 when i sprinted growing line, now im about 180+cm.
