Baywatch babe Pam Anderson joins fast-food chicken "cruelty" crusade




LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Hollywood bombshell Pamela Anderson has joined an animal rights crusade against fast-food giant KFC for allegedly allowing chicken cruelty, a US rights group said.


The "Baywatch" and "V.I.P" television star called for a worldwide boycott against Colonel Sanders' famed fried chicken chain, citing its alleged failure to crack down on chicken abuse by its suppliers.


"If people knew how KFC treats its chickens, they'd never eat another drumstick," the Canadian-born Anderson said in a letter to the head of KFC Canada's parent company, priszm brandz.


The letter was released by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which in July sued KFC for allegedly disguising "grotesque abuses inflicted upon chickens by suppliers" in its online advertising.


"I am shocked to learn from my pals at PETA that KFC has refused to take steps to eliminate some of the worst abuses suffered by the hundreds of millions of chickens who are killed for your restaurants in Canada, the US, and overseas."


Anderson joins pop superstar and former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney (news), rocker Chrissie and US hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons as well as prominent civil rights leaders in joining the PETA protest against KFC.


PETA has called on KFC to implement an eight-point plan aimed at improving the treatment of poultry by its suppliers.


The group accuses KFC of allowing chickens to be bred and drugged so that they become so heavy that they cripple under their own weight and of using cruel slaughter methods including scalding the birds to death in feather removal tanks and electric stunning and burning the beaks of birds.


KFC's US spokeswoman Bonnie Warschauer declined to deny the allegations but said the worldwide food chain bought its chickens from the same suppliers as US supermarkets.

Actually this is kinda on topic,
I once worked for a company that supplied chicken to KFC franchises in the UK and Ireland, plus meet used for Chicken nuggets for MacDonalds. Personally I can live without Taco Bell, Burger King and KFC, I'm not really a believer in monoculture mania.Nor do I feel the need to create a one identical, inauthentic country after another filled with Starbucks et al.

But hey we're taking about KFC. I definitely say that the breasts, thighs, drumsticks and wings used in the UK and Ireland are quality chicken not poisoned or killed due to their own body mass.

For instance, just in case anyone is interested and since I've time on my hands, I'll give you an indication of the food chain. Firstly, the company I worked for, controlled essentially the entire food chain. They breed the chicks, create and manufacture the feed they will be fed on and certify that environmental conditions includes heat, air quality, space(they're not kept in cages) and water quality. These must meet all European and Irish agricultural standards. In fact in one area alone water the general population drank was classed as not fit for the consumption of chickens!

When a batch has reached the desired size, they're taken for processing, on average 10,000 per hour are killed. Firstly they're attached to a conveyor by their legs, with their head down. Generally they panic and the handlers are scratched, attacked, and all manner of body fluids end up on your face. They then pass through a dark staging room so that they can relax and are not unnecessarily frightened. Then they pass through a salt water bath in which they're electrocuted and shortly afterwards, they're necks are slit open. One thing in the UK and also Finland most are gassed and if you smell the chicken you get an almost rotten smell even though the food has not actually gone off. They are then clinically dead, and pass through an area in which their own hearts pump out all the blood. The they pass through scalding water and are plucked, followed then, they're gutted, chilled, and finally either packaged and processed. End to end including one hour chilling it takes 90 minutes to move from end to end.

I never really saw anything untoward or disgusting while I worked there, with the exception of the ingredients for the famed McDonalds McChicken sandwich. Bone, fat from the outside of the chicken, damaged carcases, hearts, kindeys and lungs all went into a industrial blender and the pulp formed the basis of Ronalds finest. I've never eaten a chicken burger since. I shovelled fork fulls of pure fat into the blender and since the thoughts make me sick.

Interestingly, one of the guest lecturers for our SAP course was from a large meat processing conglomerate. The most interesting part of his lecture, he said there was always someone who left and became a vegetarian, was the description of the process (chickens get it pretty much the way as above, though these were electricuted too) and then he continued to show how it is hard to make the automation uderstand 5 pieces weighing approximately so-and-so. I know a few people worked in a sausage factory don't eat their stuff...

Speaking of which, has anyone read "Fast Food Nation?" Fascinating book about the whole industry, from sales tactics to farming and slaughter of the various meats.

Anyhow, there's an interesting chapter on the killing floow, where the author discusses interviews with slaughterhouse workers who just LOVE the EU meat quality standards becuase it slows down the productin line speed by about half, and they don't run nearly the risk of dropping their fingers and other body parts into the ground beef.

A great read! Really good book if you're remotely interested in where your food comes from... probably a better source than Pamela Anderson or PETA...

Hi all, I am in Ontario, Canada. I am presently writing a research paper for a post secondary Marketing course, on the ficticious topic of opening a K.F.C. in Estonia as the Marketing Plan must be based on a country which does not have a K.F.C. I would have preferred a better topic though this is the course content and deviation from the plan was disallowed. I am rather courious as to the reason why Finland does not have a K.F.C. Is Finland a health concious society? Further, is Estonia a health concious society as well? I know several Finnish people of all ages and they appear to be in excellent health, especially the seniors, and display the complete absence of obesity. I have spent several hours searching the internet for tangable answers yet have come up empty handed. So, I now find myself in the position where I need to ask the fine people of Finland for their honest and knowledgable opinions on the subject. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated. Maybe you should go elsewhere to look for advice re nutrition and health!

Yeah, where can you find more current stats?

I think I saw more fat people in 2002 than I do today. Except children, I hate to see overweight children and I could strangle parents who feed their kids into that state.

I just don´t like "facts" like this "tammilehto´s" one: "Finland is the second most obese country in the world". That is total crap.
