What to do when youngest turns 3.......

Post by oompah18 » Mon May 24, 2010 10:51 pm

My youngest is only 18mths right now, but a number of people have been asking me what I plan to do when my kotihoidontuki time runs out. My Finnish is "improving", but not jobworthy I fear, & I have never worked in Finland (been here since 2002, either pregnant or in receipt of this homecare money, the whole time a kotiäiti!)
I have browsed the kela & unemployment websites a lot, but there is so much confusing info!
My profession is school teacher, majoring in Music (with 18 years experience, but no Masters degree).
I am just wondering whether I should put this into the jobs forum, but I thought I would ask you mums how you got on first, anything welcome......

Have another baby? ;)

But seriously - IIRC you live quite a way up north?
You might make some pocket money giving music lessons but perhaps something in the tourist business of some kind is an option?

With a good understanding of music, private lessons or the adult education groups are probably the easiest option. It won't give you a real income, but it is something on the side and your Finnish will improve.

I would just apply for jobs, because it is not so easy to find music teachers, at least not in our region.

And my own experience... And yes I know I have been very lucky... When I arrived here my Finnish was also not jobworthy... but I applied and got a job only 6 weeks after arrival and my Finnish improved a lot during that 1st schoolyear. It was a though year with lots of extra work (translating, etc) but it was worth it, because I have been working since then (except for my maternity leaves).... So just go for it!
