I picked up the domain name raina.info some time back & Google Translate tells me it means "web" in Finnish; so was wondering if this was true? Do you guys think the domain has some value?
Thank You!
Question on domain name
Re: Question on domain name
I've never once countered the word in over 20 years of reading Finnish.
It means "filmstrip," a medium so obsolete that many people under 40 don't even know what it is when they hear the word for it in their native language. It also has a technical meaning in the manufacturing of paper.
Taken together with a top-level domain of .info, I hope you didn't spend anything on the name.

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
Re: Question on domain name
P.S. The real word in Finnish for web or network is verkko.

Re: Question on domain name
Alden is right, that the literal translation of raina has nothing to do with the WWW, but yes, raina does translate as web but of another kind.AldenG wrote:...It means "filmstrip," a medium so obsolete that many people under 40 don't even know what it is when they hear the word for it in their native language. A more valuable combination could be raina.net because .net was originally for use by WWW institutions, as .net = network.
However, just what any of those combinations could be worth is purely a matter of speculation, and probably not much.

Re: Question on domain name
Actually, I’d say raina is mostly used as colloquial, mundane term for “movie” these days... perhaps in a slightly pejorative/belittling/disapproving sense. Compare to “rag” for newspaper or magazine; it’s pretty much a similar word. Perhaps someone would like to buy it and set up a movie review site or online video store but I somehow doubt it, especially given the somewhat obscure “.info” TLD.AldenG wrote:I've never once countered the word in over 20 years of reading Finnish.

Re: Question on domain name
Yeah, raina means a movie. I haven't heard anyone use it in years, but in my childhood people used the word more.
