We recently found out that we will be moving to Helsinki for 6 months (January - June 2012).
Does anyone have any suggestions how to even begin looking for English education for my two boys (ages 11/6th grade and 7/2nd grade) for the second half of the school year?
The International School is not within our family budget.
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Mary

Found this page with a bit of googling:
http://www.helsinki.fi/en/index/koulutu ... glish.html
It has the contact info of different schools in the greater Helsinki region.
One school not mentioned here is the European School (http://www.esh.fi)

You're very welcome.
And, by the way, schools in Finland are on summer holiday till mid-August, so there probably isn't anyone there to answer your questions until then.

Yes, I discovered that already! I already e-mailed two of the schools and received automatic out-of-office replies.luulio wrote:You're very welcome.

Would a child living in Helsinki go to a school in Espoo or Vanta?
Re: English Education for 1/2 year
There is a reciprocal agreement between Helsinki and Espoo for schooling but, as far as I know, this is not the case for Vantaa.
But remember, you will have to pay the transport costs yourself (roughly 4e per day on public transport for a child if crossing the border) and things like dental and health check-ups which are normally carried out in school are also not given to kids from out of the municipality. Eg: one of my boys had an accident at school (Helsinki) and the nurse put him in a taxi and sent him to Jorvi (Espoo) for treatment. Of course, Jorvi then sent him back to Meilahti because he needed a specialist eye doctor
Another problem my boys have often grumbled about is that their friends won't come out to Espoo because the bus fare is too expensive. So if they want to bring friends over after school, more often than not I cough up the extra euros for the transport.
For schools with waiting lists, children from within the municipality are given priority.
