No, they give it back. I was told that they usually ask for it back once they have decided to grant you the permit at which point they keep it for a few days and return it with the RP stuck on it :)

Unfortunately you're in limbo during the application process. They won't kick you out, but you cannot do anything (no legal transactions, no official studies, no ...)
Not even travelling abroad (when you leave, they don't have to let you back in)

Unfortunately you're in limbo during the application process.
That's why you are really supposed to make the application and do the waiting abroad.

you can get there as soon as it opens or you can make an appt (don't be late or it is gone).
Do we make the appointment online in advance at the immigration police website? Anyone tried this before?

I applied at the Kuopion poliisi and I didn't have to make any appointment.
Just went there and it took less than 10 minutes.
They stayed with my passport though...

Ok finally I submitted my RP application last Friday to Malmi police, I had everything ready except a document as proof of me and my husband living together. So they asked me to call them up the next day to explain (rented apartment with only my husband's name on it), which I did this morning. The officer then asked me to write a letter explaining that. So I went again to submit the letter together with a copy of extract of population information system from maistraatti (as alternate supporting doc) and they also asked to leave my passport with them. I asked them why, they said usually could be a decision on my permit gonna be made soon. If that's the case, that's really fast! I was thinking it could be because of my situation I explained in the application form that I'm 5 months pregnant now :P

So anyone of you have been asked to submit the passport to them? Is that a sign that they are gonna issue a permit soon?

How long you had to wait in the line? When did you reach there?

I went by appointment, which I made like 2-3 weeks earlier because they only have 4 time slots for appointment a day, from 1pm-230pm. Though they still made us waited for 20 mins than appointed time.
If you really wanna get early number, I suggest you reach there by 730am at least or earlier before they open at 8am.

Just an update to all, I'd finally got my residence permit today from Malmi police station, total processing time was 9 days!! I was expecting to wait for at least a month or two, but I think it could be mainly because of the reason of me being pregnant now I put in the application form to request for speedy process :D
Thanks to all for your input previously on my queries few months earlier!
