House Insulation

Post by sppuuddy » Sun Nov 06, 2011 12:55 pm

Hello, have a house built in the 1970`s and it has sawdust as roof insulation its about 200mm deep and it seems pretty good, but with the price of oil i am hoping to improve it.
Is it possible to put new insulation over the sawdust something like Rockwool or the likes, or is there any problem that it can cause like causing moisture in the sawdust or any other unforeseen problems.

Best to replace the sawdust with something better. Have a google for R -values of sawdust versus other insulating options, that'll give you a good idea which direction to take.
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

We just had 30 cms insulation added in our loft using Sellovilla (Edit: Selluvilla) which is made of recycled textiles. The company was called
Termo-something from Forssa. You need about 40cms minimum to get the full effect. We got three quotes and they were the cheapest. Took about 2-3 hours. The hardest part was emptying all the junk out of the attic first.

From sawdust to rockwool you'll need also add vapour barrier and then you got yourself the dreaded pullotalo with mold problems. Thus go with the same route as penelope did and change sawdust to pulp wool. Just be sure to leave enough air room above the insulation and something else than plastic as air barrier.

I would also consider quality heat pump and check the sealing of doors and windows. As you got sawdust as insulation there most likely isn't powered ventilation, so don't make the windows totally airtight, if you tape the windows, leave something like 15 cm out on top of the window. There used to be tape specifically made for taping windows.

I have read of cases (in the UK) where insulation made of wool have been attractive to mice as a place to make their home. Is that not a problem here? Or did you mean something other than natural (sheeps) wool?

When talking about the insulation of house, wool refers to glass, rock or pulp one :)

Part of insulating a house is in the insulation material, having a sufficient R value, but an equally important aspect is in correct and proper ventilation, outside the insulation.

The interior of a house gets surrounded by insulation, walls and ceiling, but between the insulation and the exterior walls and roof there must be adequate ventilation.

The insulation keeps the house warm, and the roof and the exterior walls keep the insulation dry, but there must be adequate ventilation between the insulation and the exterior.

The company we used is called Termex.

http://www.termex.fi/get.php?page_id=3268 (in English, Finnish and Swedish). They were quick, efficient and cheaper than the other two companies we got quotes from. And don't forget, the labour cost (in our case about half the total bill) is tax deductible.

According to their website it is cellulose wool (ie a pulp by-product)

Thanks Penelope will check them out, having an air pump fitted this month but with the price of heating fuel, keeping the heat in the house is probably the most important thing. If i knew insulating over the sawdust was not a problem would do it myself but it seems where ever or whoever i ask it seems a grey area so maybe better get the professionals in and hear what they say.

Hi sppuuddy, I just built a house a few km down the road from you, it's new so materials are probably a bit different but we have the ceiling first then frame, plastic, a 100mm sheet of insulation and on top of that is 50-60 cm of blown in wool. The main thing is the barrier between the hot air from the room and the cold air above. With the plastic it has to be sealed with tape and checked for any holes. Any pipes in the loft should also be insulated as this could cause condensation.
Sawdust and wool I'm not sure if you can mix but maybe you could ask in the shops (K-Rauta) get a few answers and compare rather than pay someone straight away.
Warning though if you do remove the sawdust wear a good mask and protective clothing as pests may or have probably been living there and you could get quite ill!
P.S if you have oil heating maybe someday convert to a more efficient system. There are lots of options and saves money in the long run! YNWA!

RT "cards" are quite widely used but you need to buy the user rights. You can search there depending on what structure and what insulation you are talking about.

I have been looking at Structural insulated panel which seem to be quite popular around the world. I dont seem to find any local producers? Anyone seen this type of product produce locally?
