need some advice

Post by risk » Thu Jan 19, 2012 4:06 pm

Hello,

I am a computer science master student and working full time as research assistant for my master thesis now. I already have a permanent job position with 2400 euros per month (after-tax) in my country. I will never get fired, but I have to go back before this July or I will lose my position. The living expense in my country is around 3/4 of the expense in Finland.

I am non-EU citizen who have study permit, no ties to Finland, and I cannot speak Finnish. I have 10 years experience in information security field, and 2 years experience in programming. I have some information security credentials, such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP), GIAC Assessing and Auditing Wireless Networks (GAWN), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), CompTIA Security+, and CIW Security Analyst.

The gender equality, living and working environment make me to think about staying in Finland. However, I worry about the future economic depression in EU. Even though I can get a permanent job here, there is still a big chance for me to get fired, especially I am a foreigner. Additionally, although the salary seems high here, the tax rate is high and so is the living expense.

I wonder whether it is worthy to give up my permanent job in my country and work in Finland. Could anyone give me some advice such as range of salary I can get or probability to get permanent job in Finland? Thank you in advance.

I'd think the answer would be obvious. Follow the logic!

And compete with a few thousand Nokia IT workers that become redundant soon?

Can I have your job if you don't want it? :ochesey:

Yeah, the "will never get fired" part is making me go . Hold on to that! Seriously!

There is lots of work in the IT sector if you are a specialist, but yeah... it is a very volatile sector. Whole departments can at any point be made redundant, and it has absolutely nothing to do with if you were a good worker or not. It is definitely not a sector where you work for the same company your whole career. If I were you I would go back to your old job and wait a few years until the economy starts to (hopefully, please!) pick up again.
