Saha: Henry has edge over Van Nistelrooy
Wednesday March 31 2004
Manchester United's new forward Louis Saha claims his team-mate Ruud Van Nistelrooy is not as complete a player as his Arsenal rival Thierry Henry.
Saha, speaking three days before United take on Arsenal in an FA Cup semi-final which represents their last chance of any silverware this season, believes van Nistelrooy falls short of Henry's standard in several areas.
Former Fulham forward Saha argues Henry scores over van Nistelrooy particularly when it comes to experience and the ability to find the net from distance. He said: "Ruud lacks big-match experience. He has never played in major finals, either with United or with Holland, and he needs to gain experience at the highest level."
Saha continued: "Thierry is far more experienced. He has played in the finals of the World Cup, Euro 2000 and Confederation Cup and he is battle-hardened. He knows how to approach games like these."
Saha, a £12.8million transfer-window signing, is cup-tied for Saturday's match at Villa Park.
But he has seen enough already in his short time at Old Trafford to be fairly confident Henry is much more likely than van Nistelrooy to score a spectacular winner this weekend.
"Ruud never scores from outside the 18-yard area and never takes free-kicks. It is very rare to see him trying his luck from distance," he said.
"Ruud doesn't take much of a part in the team's collective play. His game is all about finishing."
I think up at Old Trafford they call this kind of talk "doing a Jaap Stam". Expect to see Saha pushed out in the summer
