me and my (future) dog
There was no 'Dogs in Finland' topic, so I thought this would be the best place to put this. My dilemma is this: I would love to get a dog, but I travel to the U.S. (and elsewhere) in the summer and at Christmas...and I have nobody here who would take care of it for me. Does anybody know how I can get around this without paying an absurd amount of money? I wouldn't take the dog on an airplane, and have heard the private dogsitting services are crazily expensive. I guess it's good to indicate that I live in Helsinki. Thanks in advance.

Make friends and get them to dog-sit for you (I'd love to but the cats wouldn't be very happy).

Seriously Dave071061? It's hard to imagine why you would even post that as it can't be that you actually thought it was funny (it wasn't) or insightful (it wasn't). Thanks for wasting the time of both of us.

But he has a point. If you can't get someone to take care of the dog, nor can't pay the absurd fees of kennels, then maybe you shouldn't get a dog right now?whomadewho wrote:Seriously Dave071061? I posted it because I don´t want to be reading posts from you in 18 months time looking for a new home for your dog because you have finally realized that dogs have a major impact on all areas of your life, your ability to travel at will being just one of them, or posts complaining about the high costs of vets fees in Finland.whomadewho wrote:Seriously Dave071061? If you HAVE to travel on a regular basis and don´t have friends or family who the dog already knows and is comfortable with who are willing to take care of the animal then quite simply it is unfair and unkind to take on the responsibility of having a dog! Get a gold fish instead!

Re: me and my (future) dog
fish need care too! they're the hardest animal to get pet-sit for you without fatalities, too.dave071061 wrote: Get a gold fish instead!
Anyway, don't you think the OP is aware of all these issues and that's why they are posting - in *advance* of getting a dog and in order to make an informed decision - for suggestions to make the situation work?
Although I'm not sure what people are going to be able to suggest - I think you either pay professionals, or get friends to do it cheap/for free.

Re: me and my (future) dog
First off, thank you AnnikaL - that's exactly why I am posting here. I won't get a dog if I can't figure this out. I thought that this would be obvious...apparently not. I was just hoping there would be some kind of 'dog sitting exchange' program for people who like dogs. For example, you would post something saying you need someone to take of your dog for a while. In exchange, you would take care of theirs if they needed it (and, naturally, if you were around to do it). If such a program doesn't exist, then it should.
Re: me and my (future) dog
We have a dog, living in Tampere, though. We could have dogs exchanges once in a whilewhomadewho wrote:There was no 'Dogs in Finland' topic, so I thought this would be the best place to put this. Exactly that kind of things are most welcome in our society! Use the web to get to know other people with similar interests...
Hopefully this dogsitting system works good and equally as well -> that no-one feels overwhelmed by the responsibilities.
