[registering in Finland] Is this all I need? (EU)

Post by ljl16 » Wed May 02, 2012 3:45 pm

Hey there,

In my long experience with red tape, I wanted to make sure that I have everything I need before I get on my way to Helsinki, just to turn back for more documents or requirements.

Here's the situation: I have a job offer in Finland, pending to sign the contract next week. I am an EU/EEA citizen. I have:
-This PDF file for the registration in the Police filled out: http://www.poliisi.fi/poliisi/home.nsf/ ... nti_en.pdf
-My travel document of arrival in Finland
-A copy of the contract (should I wait till it's signed to make a copy of it, or is just the draft enough?)

Am I missing anything?

Cheers,

Signed copy. Draft is draft and is not binding -> police can't be sure of your means of support -> no registration.

That's for police. After that you should visit magistrate office (maistraatti) tax office and Kela office.

I don't know i the police still make you wait for your 3-4 months pobation (if its on the contract) and show money paid by the company on the bank account. Tax office and maistraatti will be easier - though you need to go back to the maistraatti after you get the police paper to get yourself "domiciled" proper in the computer. Otherwise the computer will say "no" at various odd places (like getting internet banking that actually you can use as ID)

Let's see if I get it:

-Go to the police to register myself (application form + contract)
-Go to the maistraatti to get my tax card (what do I need? where can I check that?)
-Go to the Kela office to get my Kela card (if I am employed in Finland, does that entitle me to automatically obtain Kela benefits?)

@Pursuivant: In case the police makes me wait for the probation period, how would the company be able to pay me? (since I wouldn't have a taxation card) Hopefully this won't be the case.

Apart from that, what are the requirements for opening a finnish bank account?

Cheers,

I don't think the police would make you wait. I registered a few days after I signed my work contract and they didn't care. Didn't even have a bank account then.
Btw, the bank was quite a fuss with me. They didn't care about my German ID card, although I don't need a passport to travel to Finland and it even says so at the bank counter. They wouldn't let me get internet banking at first and I heard the same from other people. It was quite ridiculous.

You can get the id number and tax card for 1 month work even, the police paper is needed to get you domiciled, thats a different thing, you become a Finnish resident, instead of being some funny foreigner passing by.

Maybe this is too late by now, but anyway...

Work contract showing that you'd be likely working here at months + EU citizenship should be enough.

Apart from that, what are the requirements for opening a finnish bank account?
Policies may vary between banks and branches. Probably getting a account and online codes should not be too hard after you've got the Finnish ID code. (Noting one of the previous posts, probably better to bring your passport, even if it is not a legal requirement). I've encountered some that wanted a Finnish issued ID card before giving out debit card, but I don't think that is the norm. More likely the Finnish issued ID papers are required for getting online codes with a bit switched in the computers so, that you can actually use them for other online authentication purposes.
(Feel free to post your own experience later)

Local issued credit card you will quite likely not be able to get initially (initially, like for a couple of years), so I'd keep at least some of those that you have now.
