UK National in Suomi

I'm a non resident UK national married to a Finn. I am not permanently resident in Suomi and my wife and I work overseas.

I am in Helsinki for a short while (maybe two months) to buy a flat and then it is likely that we will again be working overseas for a couple of years on a new project.

Can anybody advise as to whether I need to formally register with the Finnish Authorities given that I am co-purchasing property here, even though I am not intending to live or work here.

Well, the thing is on the one hand you don't need to, you might want to check if you are married to your wife though (in the computer) as if you did it abroad and not registered at the embassy, well, the computer ain't clarvoyant. It might well be you are "in the computer" and may even have an ID number. Which then really makes life a whole lot easier, with banks etc. so I'd suggest you ask your missus what her ID number is and where she last lived before she skipped the country and head to the maistraatti of Helsinki and explain you're married to this woman and wish to check the records are up-to-date. They might give you some attitude you is not her, but in all honesty, you should be "in the computer" related to her so you're just checking yourself. The thing is then if the computer says no - if you want to be married to her - in the computer - you might have to do some whistles and hoops (might be easier then to do it all via the embassy wherever you got married if you're still there) to provide the appropriate apostilled marriage license etc.

So in any case, the maistraatti is the place to go to - the police won't be interested as you're not going to be a resident, but having an ID number will make things easier.

We got married in Kuopio in 2005 but we have never been resident in Suomi.

Well, then its a high chance you have an ID number and that you are "in the computer" - you still want to check your records at the maistraatti. Its much easier to function you have that magic number and the computer verifies your story.
