In the UK there's usually frost in the morning- doesn't seem to be a real problem with "normal" tires. Snow, well, it's OK if you stay under 50... MPH.
Driving through Sweden is probably OK, unless it's the very middle of the Winter. You can always go slower.

Well, nothing reassures me more of an average Brit's black ice spotting capabilities than an internet stranger's assurance. Hopefully the people one sees on the news everytime Britain gets a bit of snowfall learn it too.

Or that an average person could come teach to us too, god knows we need the help after every "winter surprised the drivers" news story.

Yes, everyone does that here. It is really cost-effective and all the stud patterns of all the manufacturers are at every shop. The studs stick to the tire better that way, and if you do it manually, you get added fun of making sure it goes along with all the regulations. Nokian Renkaat though really rarely lets other people use their machines. :]

I'm sharing a similar concern, except that I am driving there, and I A; can't buy studs in England, and B; Can't legally use them in England, France..........,

Studded tyres are legal in France from 11th November until March.
Your speed becomes limited to 90km/h even on motorways.
You have also to display a sticker at the back of your car, it is circular with a printing of spikes along its perimeter and a big 90 printed in the middle.
(so that you can be easily spotted and fined by French police if you drive over 90)
