Can I go to Estonia without my residence permit

Post by Matjan » Wed Dec 05, 2012 9:59 pm

Hi all!
So I'm a student in Helsinki and currently I don't have my residence permit because it is being processed. My old residence permit already expired and I won't get my new one for another 3 months. In the "todistus hakemuksen jättämisestä" (the only paper the police gave me when i applied for residence permit), there is no information about anything at all except for my name, passport number, birth date and application date plus estimated processing time (which is 5 months :? ). I'm wondering if I'm actually able to go to Estonia during the Christmas holiday. Thanks before :D

I still can't find the answer I'm looking for. I know that I need my schengen residence permit to go to Estonia. But is it ok to go there if my residence permit is in process? Right now I don't hold a residence permit, only a document that prove that my residence permit is in process from the police.

you can, nothing is stopping you
...............but if your horoscope is not in your favor, and if you're inspected then in worst of the worst case scenario you might get a free ticket to your home country with not-so-nice stamp on your passport.

http://www.migri.fi/services/faq/residence_permits
Question 15 leads to this
http://www.poliisi.fi/poliisi/home.nsf/ ... endocument

The foreign national will be legally resident in the country while the application is being processed until a legally valid decision has been made in the matter, or an enforceable decision to remove the foreign national from the country has been made.

you just need to abide by the travel document system in the EU.

Also, Estonian jails lack the luxus-luxus Nordic acommodation standards.

Do you go to estonia because things like shops/etc remain open on Christmas day?

ive got a feeling that estoni officials would send you back to finland, so i dont see why not go, after all if you can prove who you are and you can prove your residence renewal is ongoing.

Much of what used to be done by eyeballing the stream of disembarking passengers is now done by computer before you arrive. So people not getting pulled out (randomly or otherwise) doesn't say much one way or the other about your personal chances.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Its a chance you take. The ship company might not let you on board for one. Then the border guards hit you with a fine for illegal entry. Estonians can well not understand a Finnish letter if they feel like it.

Is there actually a border guard in harbour? I've only seen once but it was in Stockholm, not in Helsinki or Tallinn. Anyway even though I have proof that my residence permit renewal is ongoing, on the police website it says that this document only valid in Finland (more or less as I understand it). And I was thinking of going to Estonia cause I have close friends there :)
