Hello all,
I studied abroad in Helsinki a few years ago, back in 2010. I was going through a pile of old financial documents today, when it occurred to me that I’m not sure that I closed my Nordea account (whichever simple checking account foreign students can have) when I left. I looked through my documents to see if I had any record of closing it, but I haven’t found anything. It’s been so long that I just don’t remember if I did. I do remember being in a giant rush to get everything together before I left, and now I’m worried that maybe I didn’t actually close it down properly like I thought I did.
I’m wondering if this is a big problem for me. Is there a way I can call and find out? If I screwed up and my account wasn’t closed, will I owe Nordea a bunch of money for an account that hasn’t been used? The Visa electron card that was tied to the account is long gone--I remember cutting it up at some point. Should I just let it go?
Nordea Account Question

Just let it go. Nothing to worry about.

Can you give your info to him so he can bill you if your info is wrong?Sunil-123 wrote:Just let it go. Nothing to worry about.
Probably there is no problem but call or email them. Numbers etc are in their page.

Re: Nordea Account Question
If there was a monthly fee for the services (and/or card you had, then those could have continued for the 2-3 years. Cutting the card does not cancel it, at least if you do not inform the bank.
If I remember correctly you can't even get the information if person X has bank account without identification, so I really do not know is there anything one can do from abroad (without banking codes you obviously do not have). If you have the bank account number somewhere maybe you could try contact and ask if that account still exists (they do not have to confirm its current or former owner).
Here is news item from 2009 indicating that Nordea would NOT charge service fees from unused negative balance bank accounts, but legally they might have changed the policy:

Re: Nordea Account Question
That's a very practical point. Since it's been so long, I don't have any of the codes, and I don't think I even have the account number. I have no way to validate that it's mine other than my name. I suppose it might sound weird if I called up and said, "I don't have any of the account information or codes, but please shut it down if it's still open." :/If I remember correctly you can't even get the information if person X has bank account without identification, so I really do not know is there anything one can do from abroad (without banking codes you obviously do not have). If I remember correctly, I didn't pay anything for the account or the card (as it was debit, not credit). And I was on such a strict budget at the time that I would've remembered paying a monthly fee. So at least there's that.
Thanks for all of the help and advice, everyone!
