In Finland, LPG is not used as motor vehicle fuel, and consequently, it is not available even for the tourists' vehicles.
Re: LPG car in Finland
Is LPG merely not used for cars, or is it illegal for car use? I seem to remember reading on this forum at some time that it was illegal, but maybe that is my memory playing tricks.

Thanks for your answers.
Ok, I understand that aren't LPG stations in Finland. But is illegal? If police check the car, can I get a penalty?

You can drive with the remaining gas in your tank, but you cannot refill it.
So if your caught with a nearly full tank somewhere in the middle of Finland there are some questions to be answered.

Re: LPG car in Finland
I really wonder why LPG is not allowed as car fuel in Finland? Is it allowed as household fuel?
What do you want from me?????
Re: LPG car in Finland
Ok, so if I have empty LPG tank, I will have not problem with police.
Re: LPG car in Finland
According to the sources used by this Wikipedia article, this is because LPG is not currently taxed the same way as other fuels used in cars. As long as this does not change, the tax man sees LPG as a way to sidestep the “normal” fuel taxes, which is a no-no.foca wrote:I really wonder why LPG is not allowed as car fuel in Finland?
That said, LPG is commonly used in forklifts and some other special machinery. In normal households, LPG is also very commonly used in BBQ grills and to run gas hobs, ovens and fridges in summer cottages which are not connected to the electrical grid. Additionally, LPG is used for the same purposes in RVs. Many restaurants also use LPG to run their gas cookers. You can get LPG for these latter purposes in recyclable deposit cylinders from most service stations.
(Natural gas is not widely available in Finland for domestic use. You can get a pipe to your home in some places in downtown Helsinki but the number of users is minuscule. Biogas is used to power vehicles, though — primarily local buses in cities, I guess, but the government is planning to increase its use in all traffic because it would help Finland meet the CO₂ emissions reduction targets.)

So there is no need to do any extra tricks with your LPG vehicle when entering Finland. You just use the gas away and continue with petrol.

Re: LPG car in Finland
There is somewhere in the TRAFI rules, that this kind of vehichles can not be driven in "public roads". Basically the ban is on "homemade/aftermarket" conversions that would use a regular gas bottle, but ones using a tank are also not allowed. Basically, only "factory-made" MPG cars are allowed as gas vehicles.Jukka Aho wrote:That said, LPG is commonly used in forklifts and some other special machinery.
