English Language Teaching Jobs in Helsinki/Uusimaa

Post by mankki11 » Thu Mar 21, 2013 2:00 pm

HI there,

I am a native speaker of English and I am currently looking for full-time work in the Helsinki/Uusimaa region. I would be interested in working as an English teacher in some capacity. I have a TEFL certificate and some teaching experience previously. I have worked and studied in multicultural environments and I enjoy meeting people from different cultural backgrounds. If anyone out there is looking for an honest, reliable, hard-working and flexible employee then please do not hesitate to contact me.

I don't know of any language schools that take on full-time teachers (with or without a TEFL cert) but the biggest employers in the sector are EF and AAC so you could try them. In Finland most EFL teachers are self-employed or freelancers who work with several schools simulataneously. It takes a while to accumulate enough hours to get a decent salary.

You would probably need a Masters degree in English + experience to teach English in a school or university.

Occasionally the English-speaking pre-school daycares take on people too. I think there is a list of (English-speaking) establishments on helsinki.fi or check the ads on www.mol.fi

Try language schools (e.g. teaching business English) such as Delingua and Berlitz (and google for more), there you may not need to have a master's degree but have to be a native English speaker. TEFL should be a bonus.

Every employer in the field knows that the typical 2-3 weeks course that gives a TEFL certificate is not worth much.

Thanks for the advice!

I have already tried AAC and Berlitz and several others and got no response. It actually takes a lot longer than 3 weeks to do the TEFL course I did but I take your point in that if you are competing with someone for a job who has a Master's degree in Education and lots of experience it doesn't amount to much. I will try a couple of other places. I have a Master's degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology and I was thinking it might be an option to teach that subject somewhere but I am not sure exactly where and who to contact. Any advice on that would be great!

Cheers! :D

One place you could try...

But you don't say where you are from. If you are not an EU national then finding any teaching job in English will be almost impossible. There are plenty of Finns who can teach in English. But if you are an EU national (don't need an RP) then you can made do with freelance work on a parttime temporary basis, which is the best way to get started.
