Performing and registering marriage in finalnd

Post by Aleshaz » Thu May 02, 2013 5:31 am

Hi
I am from Pakistan studying here in Finland. Now my girlfriend just arrived in finland for her PhD. She is from algeria. I want to know if i want to marry her and register all stuff in Finland. And also not for now but in next RP, i will have to apply on family ties.
Can you please tell me what stuff we both need to perform and register a marriage in finland.

Thanks in advance :) :D

Peace

Dunno, ask your mom?

Basically, you need a paper from pakistan / pakistani embassy stating you are not married and she needs a paper from algeria / algerian embassy stating she is not married. If the papers are original they need to be apostilled so after you have these papers you can go to the maistraatti and ask for a check for impediments and get married in Finland.

there was some confusion caused by few person i know. They said as you mention always in your RP form that you are single so you are registered single in city admin. database so you do not need that bachelor certificate ... so its not true or it doesnt work ?
Thanks for the previous reply :) kiitos paljon :D

As neither Algeria or Pakistan are signatories to the relevant convention, full legalization (by foreign ministry of that country and then of the local Finnish embassy) seems necessary.

They can apply for RP on family ties if they are Non-Eu citizens?

Yes. (THey should be able to support themselves, but then that should roughly so apply to EU-citizens as well)

Yes, but you do not prove this when you get the RP, so you need to get that "bachelor paper" from the authorities at home.... and what was stated the papers then need to be taken to the ministry of foreign affairs and the local Finnish embassy.... unless the local Embassies are willing to give such a paper (I think Pakistan embassy is in Sweden, don't know about Algiers)

A family member is a family member, no matter what kind of RP you have.

The "family member" piggybacks on the original permit holder, so if they have one for 6 months, the end dates are the same. However one snag is that there is the necessity for the health insurance and the "income requirement" as well - which is higher for non-students.

Algeria's embassy is also in Stockholm.

To the OP: I'm not sure they deliver such papers there (you'd need to ask them directly) because in Algeria there isn't a neat computer system where all the citizens' data is entered. If the embassy can't deliver the certificate, your fiancée needs to do the following:

1- Go to town hall (municipality of residence) with a number 12 birth certificate and two male witnesses who will attest that she is unmarried. She will be delivered a certificate of "singlehood" or whatever (tell her to get it in French as it's easier to translate from that)
2- Take the certificate to the "Daïra" (she'll know what that is) and ask for a stamp for "documents destined for use abroad"
3- Go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, department of "Etat Civil" to get the document certified (tell her she needs to take a 20 dinar fiscal stamp with her)
4- Go to the embassy of Finland in Algiers (any day of the week, from 9 to 12) and get the final authorization stamp (equivalent of 30 euros)
5- Get document officially translated into Finnish or Swedish (not sure if English counts? Need to ask maistraatti)
6- Apply to maistraatti.
7- Get married after the appropriate waiting period.

As far as I know, she only needs to be there for the first step. From then on, a third party can do the work for her.
