Hi there,
I'm looking for a good Finnish-English-Finnish dictionary on the Amazon, but I can't settle on one. The more expensive ones have no comments posted by previous buyers and do not show examples of how the dictionary looks inside, so it's like taking an expensive bet.
Also, by "good" I mean on good-quality thin paper, with well spaced and readable print.
Also, it is important for me that the dictionary entries read like articles, i.e. every word is explained with lots of examples, in which the word is spelled out several times (i.e. without these '~', because with each time your eye sees the word spelled out, it's imprinted in your brain more and more).
Could somebody recommend me one?
Thanks,
JO
Finnish-English-Finnish Dictionary Recommendation
Re: Finnish-English-Finnish Dictionary Recommendation
I think WSOY suomi-englanti-suomi sanakirja is the best one. Though i don't use the paper version much, CD version that comes along is real good, esp if you are a guy who spends time in front of a computer. Well ya .... wikitionary is also there
Let's give you examples from those two dictionaries that I have.
from WSOY (expanded edition 2005) for mainita:
mainit|a mention; (viitata jhk) refer to; ~ esimerkki jstak quote t. give an example of sth; ~ nimeltä mention by name; hän ei maininnut siitä sanaakaan he didn't mention it, he didn't say anything about it; jättää jk -sematta pass sth over in silence
from Ilkka Rekiaro Douglas Robinson (10th edition) for mainita:
mention Et maininnut minua sanallakaan You didn't say anything about me, you forgot to mention me Voisitko mainita muutamia esimerkkeijä? Could you give me/list/cite some examples? Hän mainitsi erityisesti kolme nimeä he listed/gave three names in particular, he expressly mentioned three names naimittakoon let it be noted kuten edellä mainittiin as was noted/indicated earlier/above
but then again,
from WSOY for mainos (from Cd copy+paste, lazy to type)
1 advertisement (jnk for), (ark) ad, (Br m) advert;
(televisiomainos) commercial;
(mainosjuliste) bill;
(mainostaulu, tienvarsimainos) hoarding, (Am) billboard
2 (mainoslehtinen) leaflet, advertising brochure;
jaella mainoksia kadulla hand out advertising leaflets in the street
3 (mainonta, julkisuus) publicity;
se on hyvää mainosta maallemme it is good publicity for our country
from Ilkka & co.
advertisement, (ark) ad; (TV:ssä) commercial hyvää mainosta good advertising/publicity
if you are in finland, you can go to a local library and compare dictionaries by yourself. If you have already grasps of basics, then perhaps you should be thinking of finnish ones that have things exaplained in finnish only, no english. not suitable for beginners though.
you should search old threads here e.g. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=45793

Which one is it, this: http://www.amazon.com/Gummeruksen-suomi ... s+Robinson

Thanks
Re: Finnish-English-Finnish Dictionary Recommendation
I believe it's the second one from your two choices from Amazon. It's the one I have on my desk at work so I can verify the examples are the same. I agree that while the WSOY one is better, this yellow one uses ~ less often.
I will say that I do use the WSOY one with the CD, even with all the ~it almost always has an example that fits the way I want to use the word, and the yellow one, because it uses more space spelling out the whole word in every example, therefore doesn't have as many examples.

Re: Finnish-English-Finnish Dictionary Recommendation
first one is a pocket dictionary but I believe the contents are the same in both. I think you should make a thread on kielikoulu section of this forum where other language learners/experts often visit.jrslv wrote:
