a strange error in Ilta-Sanomat

Post by kalmisto » Tue May 28, 2013 1:01 pm

http://www.iltasanomat.fi/kotimaa/art-1 ... 26123.html

on that page:
"Tässä yhteydessä miesten onnistui anastamaan pöydällä olleen asiakkaan matkapuhelimen. "

I would say either "miesten onnistui anastaa pöydällä olleen asiakkaan matkapuhelin" or "miehet onnistuivat anastamaan pöydällä olleen asiakkaan matkapuhelimen".

Correct: "miesten onnistui anastaa", right... anastamaan is not correct in this context.

So what happened to Iiro Rantala?

You sit in a café or on a terrace, someone ( most often someone who does not look Finnish ) steps up to you and shows you a piece of paper which he wants you ro read. When the piece of paper gets all your attention the guy´s accomplice steals your mobile or takes something from your bag. Iiro Rantala lost his wallet ( which was in his bag ).

Beware of pickpockets in crowds, especially on crowded trams and buses !

That almost sounds like you're disagreeing with kalmisto's suggestion "miehet onnistuivat anastamaan pöydällä olleen asiakkaan matkapuhelimen", but I guess you're not.

Well see now guys, you don't need to be fluent in Finnish to get a job at the ilta-rag

Good catch BTW... you see a few of those every now and then.

Heres another one that initially made my eyes bleed the other day: http://www.iltasanomat.fi/viihde/art-1288568327796.html - ah, they've now changed it. The ingress read "Ketä heitä uhkaa" - which if it was a quote, you shouldn't go "correcting" a direct quote = newspaper reporters are a bunch of liars who change what people say. Which pisses me off more than colloquailisms.

Istumahantuukin pittä käyttä pempun ja jaloitten alla.

But that *is* North-Sweden meänkieli - not "book Finnish". So you can debate is it to benefit the locals or some visiting southerner?
Maybe in a remote town in Scottish highlands - does the sign read in Lallans or English? And going to "correct" it will piss off the locals.

BTW the meänkieli is a riot sometimes http://sverigesradio.se/sida/default.as ... ramid=1017 but it shows how languages evolve

According to the article in YLE Uutiset the text was meant to be Finnish and not meänkieli.
