I'm Irish and I did it in Nordea's Hakaniemi branch with just my passport.Poison Ivy wrote: Can you tell me where you were able to open a bankaccount without your Finnish number?????

I went to Osuuspankki here in Kuopio and asked if I could open the bank account with the passport only. The man said we would be able to do it, although it would be much faster and easier if he had my ID number (the birthday number - 000T).
So I waited a bit more and I´m going back there tomorrow.

When you go to the police station to do the registration, make an appoitment in advance: https://www.ajanvaraus.fi/isl/customerC ... ation=true.
You can select the correct service for yourself, Registration of EU citizens’ and family members’ residence cards, from the option. This will secure that you get a specialist to serve you.
You can start working without a Finnish ID-number, For the tax card, you will need the ID-number but the tax card is not needed before your payroll's deadline. So if you start working September 7, and the payroll needs all data by September 23, you have time to fix the tax card and the bank account.
You can also applythe ID-number via tax office:
Even a short-term employment contract can make you qualified for applying for the Finnish personal ID. Individuals arriving in Finland for short-term employment are entitled to the Finnish personal identity number. Submit the application documents at the local tax office when you apply for the tax card (the employee´s withholding allowance certificate). In this way, you can save a trip to the Local register office. Under exceptional circumstances, applicants will have to go to the Local register office separately, if the applicant's identity cannot be fully ascertained.
It is very useful for foreign citizens to have a personal ID because it makes it easier for them to identify themselves when dealing with various Finnish authorities. Almost all authorities use the personal ID as the identifier of the customer.
Many of those working in Finland on a temporary basis are building and construction workers, university teachers and summer garden and farm workers. The procedure concerns both tax residents and nonresidents of Finland staying for no more than one year.. More info at

You can then later change your status in maistraatti if needed.
At least in Nordea, only the employmetn contract and your ID (passport etc.) is required for opening the bank account.

@ maceochi : Did I read your post correctly? You got a Nordea account with nothing more than your passport? No work contract at all?
