Re: Need help or the unbearable truth
Well, ever since I read Henri Charriere's "Papillon" , I have wanted to move to Venezuela

"By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes."
Something wicked this way comes."
Re: Need help or the unbearable truth
HEhe, the tone on this place is mostly determined by the first posts of 90% of the new posters.
Check any messageboard where a group of "old hands" are trying to answer questions, it tends to go the same way.
If (yet another) someone comes in with such posts as "i have to move to finland" "i want to live in the land of heavy metal" etc etc.
It sort of is better to give someone some cold hard truths than to blow smoke up their arse.
Most people of these forums that i've met when still living in Helsinki are very outgoing, friendly and great people.
And finns looking embaressed about this forum is because many of them do not understand what it would be like to move here as a foreigner.
My wife, who used to post here for a while, has gone through the whole integration process in Netherlands, is very similar in her advice to people moving here.
This is a great country, it has many good sides, and many amazing people living in it.
It is though, Not an easy country to move to without any support.
If you can make it here, and get yourself setup with a job, great, be welcome and explore finland etc.
But don't expect to fly in and get a job handed to you, Finland is pretty hard to get into even at the best of times and with the current troubles, it isn't a good time to go in blind

Finns looking embarrassed should stop being embarrassed and register to this forum and start replying in a way that doesn't bother them.kharnynb wrote:And finns looking embaressed about this forum is because many of them do not understand what it would be like to move here as a foreigner.

Emigrating here is seriously, honestly, not easy. OIKEASTI. It really, really isn't. Doesn't matter if you're rich, famous or whatever. If you don't have family ties to Finland, or a handful of very good degrees, or study purposes, or asylum. Then you're pretty much screwed. It's not like that situation in Russia where, this one-person-who's-name-I-cannot-remember asked to be a Russian citizen just because... well because he felt like it, and was given citizenship. (IIRC he was filthy rich and famous and just decided Russia seemed like a pretty cool place and well what the heck?!)
Dunno if it was this guy: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... nship.html
Or someone else...
It all comes down to, 'do you want the truth, or do you want a lie'?
I mean seriously. In your thread title you asked for help or the unbearable truth and I am going to rub that latter part in as hard as I can because you voided any 'buttering down' of answers by writing that.
Whether or not you had other intentions for making this thread, or you had other questions...
The MAIN question at hand was "Finland looks like a nice place, has cool music, people seem friendly. I'd like to move there, can I or not?"
The answer is no.
Sorry, really, I personally am sorry but I do not see how it is possible.
Everything else is just a personal indulgence of your own, whether it be by asking an answering questions or changing the subject to whatever you want.
But the answer to your thread's main question, about you being able to literally move here: The answer is, it'll be close to impossible.
By yourself? Sure, you could find a way. With your family? Really low chance of it going to happen.
As for 'our' attitude? We all have our reasons...
Some people are sick of people thinking they can come here for a free meal
Some of us are lonely, basement dwelling cynicists and we hate everyone
Some of us have heard the same question a million times and wish people would do the research for themselves
Some are just trolling I guess
Some of us just find the reasons for people wanting to move here, so unrealistic and warped that it makes no sense
Some people think that because it was so hard or move here, only they could do it and no one else could
Some just don't like the sound of you and don't want you to move here
etc. etc. etc.
There's those and many millions of other reasons. The one thing I can say, is that you will get yourself an honest, very realistic answer here to your questions, on this forum specifically.
As for kindness, a warm welcome and all that other irrelevant !"#¤%. Absolutely not.
If you want a hug, I hear Italy is a really nice place. If you want to come to Finland, this is the 'doormat' so-to-speak.
Most people won't even agree with me on anything that I've said, and no one really cares about anything except the 'facts' on this forum.
But maybe now you understand why people seem to 'cold' towards you and your questions. Personally I think I have a good idea of how you feel, not knowing where you belong and having the reasons that you do.
But Europe doesn't have a visa 'Menu'.. there's a due process and if you can't get your foot in the door. Then that's that.
Good luck, and have a nice life with your family.
