Recommend a hotel for viewing the aurora at Christmas time..

Post by Sarah79 » Thu Oct 24, 2013 6:48 pm

I thought this would be a common topic but I can't for the life of me work out how to search on this forum... if anyone can explain for me how it'd be good.

So this will be my first winter in Finland and I'd love to have the opportunity to see the northern lights. I want to make a trip up north during my Christmas break and stay in a hotel in a location where I can have a good chance of seeing the aurora. Some other activities (eg. snow mobiles, guided hiking, etc) on offer in the area would be a bonus... but I understand I need to be somewhere pretty remote so that there isn't any light pollution.

The one place I was looking at is the dubiously named Santa's Aurora Hotel in Luosto.. it has an aurora alarm and everything. Does anyone have experience staying at this place, or has anyone made a similar trip and is able to recommendation a great place to stay?

You should have something reasonable to do otherwise too. If it is cloudy you won't see a thing, Even if you're not, it is not guaranteed even northern Lapland and you have something (or at least much) to see on any specific night.

Shame you didn't go this past Winter.

It was the best showing of the lights in ten years.

Hope it'll be as good for you this coming Winter! :)
