I wipe mine with micro fiber towel. Or if I get something more messy on it I just wipe it with my sleeve. Dunno about best or safest though. Steer clear of anything with solvents.

I have a rubber duck from Tokyu Hands specifically designed for this purpose, it's made of thin rubber stamped out in the shape of a duck. you wipe it across the screen and dust sticks to it. you can wash the dust off since the dust sticks to the duck by static, no glue or chemicals involved. I doubt it's sold outside japan though. They come in several colours and sizes.

Always used just a damp cloth with a droplet of plain ol’ dishwashing liquid. (Fairy or similar — you only need a very minuscule amount of it.) Then another wipe (or two) with a rinsed-clean damp cloth to get rid of the residual dishwashing liquid. Then a wipe with a dry cloth to finish it up. Not exactly rocket science; never had any problems.

Done this with all kinds of screens... be it a CRT, a plastic matte anti-glare LCD, or the modern kind of “Ooh! Shiny! I can’t actually see anything but the reflections! But it’s so shiny!” useless glass-shielded novelty LCD screen type.
