Hi guys,
What is the best ferry company to go from Helsinki to Germany (Rostock or Travmunde) with a car?

They have insane prices: I asked for a quote and the answer was 1400€ with some "car discount package" ... really ? I can go to Stockholm and drive from there and will cost me 4-500 € about.

This is of course a very reasonable price:
You are travelling in high season.
The price already includes passenger fares plus cabin for you and your family.
This is the price for a return ticket.

It is of course cheaper to not use the luxury of ship travel for the whole distance and drive by yourself.

One can try going to Stockholm , then Visby , then Oskarshamn or Kalmar and drive through Mälmo to Denmark (alternatively take a ferry from Trelleborg to Rostock ). It is cheaper but will take much much longer and will involve a lot of planning and unfortunately waiting in lines.swedish ferries are relatively cheap and do not requires cabin to be booked, but one needs to sleep sometime ..... That trip might be fun though and you can see visby which is very interesting and full of history.
What do you want from me?????

I bought a car from abroad in 2012 and brought it to Finland via Finnlines; Travemünde-Helsinki, one way obviously. The "car package" was 340 €, "meal package" was 100 € (no real alternative to that on board) and then there was some sort of a mandatory "fuel charge" of 21 €. So in total, 461 €.

Btw, if you do choose Finnlines and want to use internet during the voyage, you'd better bring a short ethernet cable as there is no WLAN, just ethernet sockets in the cabins. That being said, the internet connection was the slowest I have ever experienced.

Actually it's the other way around now. Finnstar /maid /lady have all had WiFi for more than a year now, and the ethernet sockets in the cabins no longer work (I make this crossing in one direction or the other 30 - 40 times per year, it's very rare that I travel to or from Hanko or via Sweden).

You are right about the connection being slow though; it's so slow and frustrating that you are better off forgetting it entirely. There are a couple of points along the voyage where a 3G signal is obtainable from shore, especially if you go out on the helicopter deck. Finnlines really should do better though - proper internet could let business people make better use of those 28 or so hours.
